Vela, the Night-Clad, What can be said about her?

Intimidating?

Powerful?

She wore Nebulas before the Theros Gods made it cool?

Yes to all of these and more, so then why not consider her for the next commander of your EDH deck?

Velas utility as a commander can be broken down into 2 parts:

The First and most obvious route is her ability to give all of your creatures intimidate. if you're not familiar with the ability, it reads "A creature with intimidate cant be blocked except by artifact creatures and/or creatures that share a color with it."Intimidate Rulings

Now her 2nd ability is what lets Vela truly shine. "Whenever Vela the Night-Clad or another creature you control leaves the battlefield, each opponent loses 1 life." Now there are some important things to dissect about this ability;

1st it says "Vela or another creature you control" This means that if a spell that wipes the board like i don't know...

Her ability will trigger for each of your creatures and herself at the same time (Vela Rulings)

Your opponents may suddenly find that their

suddenly looks much less appealing to cast once Vela hits the field...

And suddenly that

sitting in your hand starts to look like Damnation+Mind Spring+ multiple Blazes all on one card.

The 2nd thing you should notice is that the text says "leaves" not "dies". That means, dies, exiles, or in the case of this deck, bouncing and/or blinking all trigger the ability.

The 3rd this to notice is small but can always come in to play in EDH. Vela does not damage the enemy, it is "loss of life" and much harder to prevent.

Deadeye Infinite Show

Now we could spend forever on all the unique interactions this deck provides, so lets instead focus on listing some of the Biggest combos it provides.

Start with an Un-Tapper Dork i.e. Great Whale, Peregrine Drake or the more famous

then add in

and you have infinite mana! Then thrown in Vela the Night-Clad to make each opponent lose infinite life!

Deathmantle infinite Show

Another combo also involves an Un-Tapper dork of your choice

equipped with

Gives you infinite Mana and bounces once again; then you can even get really cheeky and throw in

to nuke the board of non-black creatures if you cant get your commander out to win on the spot!

Cloudstone Infinite Show

Another, though less flashy, combo involves

add in any combination of Peregrine Drake Palinchron and Great Whale and you create an infinite bounce loop (and infinite mana if you have Temple of the False God or Dimir Aqueduct out) and of course with infinite bouncing comes infinite damage with Vela on the board.

Sadly not every game lets you draw all the cards you want to... and for times like these we have tutors! and with Blue and Black we have the best tutors that Magic has!

Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Mystical Tutor, Rune-Scarred Demon (bounce this Demonic tutor on a stick for extra fun)

Counters Show

What would a blue deck be without counter spells? and though most decks cant hope to lock down multiple opponents with pure counter spells, it is best to have some answers for other players big plays.

Counterspell, Overwhelming Denial, Mindbreak Trap, and Disdainful Stroke

Creature Hate Show

Because some things just need to die.Go for the Throat, Hero's Downfall, Shriekmaw (B-B-B-Bounce him), and Curse of the Swine

Board Clears Show

Because screw every body else! You clear the board and if Vela was on the field you just put a major hurting on all the other players! (She works as a decent board wipe deterrent for other players as well)

Cyclonic Rift, Evacuation, and Decree of Pain

Card Draw Show

When playing blue you have acess to some of the best draw spells in the game and this deck takes full advantage of that.From those that take advantage of all the evasive tricks that this deck is full of such as Deepfathom Skulker, Coastal Piracy, and Bident of Thassa

to the more normal draw engines such as Mulldrifter (Bounce abuse incoming) and Rhystic Study

Bounce Show

Now all we need is some more bounce enabilers, because as fun as ninjas are, they are not the most reliable of bounce engines.

Equilibrium, Conjurer's Closet, Crystal Shard, and Erratic Portal (make sure to pay attention to the fact that both crystal shard and erratic portal let you bounce your own creatures easily while also taking advantage of a careless opponent)

Ramp Show

While blue and black may not be the strongest of the mana-ramp colors, they still have a few options.

Ashnod's Altar, Dimir Signet, Talisman of Dominance, Sol Ring, and for extra utility Thought Vessel.

Special mention to Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Myriad Landscape.

And most importantly

Because you have to stay fashionable (and they are both pretty good)

Thassa, God of the Sea and Erebos, God of the Dead

Then "POOF" we went from having a fun little idea to a deck that is actually quite mean and competitive in most circles (it of course could be made meaner without as many Ninjas, but wheres the fun in that?!).
