Pinball Wizard

a collection of curious and chaotic sorceries

discontinued

This deck fetches lands and plays signets until round four or five, at which time you should play Golos, Tireless Pilgrim. Then you get the choice of playing big stuff from hand, or activating Golos' chaotic top decking adventures - aka. the three-round pinball game of doom. If you aren't in a dire situation and need to play a board wipe, I suggest you choose the latter.

The deck is filled to the rim with large (CMC > 5) instants and sorceries that should be able to alter the game state in interesting ways. The largest categories are token producers, and board wipes. Tokens are needed for combat damage, as combat damage is the primary wincon, and board wipes are used for the occasional board cleaning. To be able to activate Golos or cast cards with exotic card costs, the land base is very versatile. The deck also includes the full set of signets.

After playtesting, it seems that its quite easy to get each colored mana for Golos' ability, so I tend to fetch Reliquary Tower with him. It really comes in handy in combination with the draw spells. The second best land to fetch would be Command Tower. One should also remember to not play lands right before activating Golos' ability, as you can play a land from the exiled cards instead.

It seems that just a few cards are generally good enough to play instead of activating Golos, these include:

  • Board wipes when the board is out of control;

  • Storm Herd, which honestly feels like the best card in the deck;

  • Emergent Ultimatum, which lets you cast two large spells of choice, given your opponents can't allow Storm Herd to be cast;

  • Aminatou's Augury, which is probably as good as Golos' ability because you can choose from more spells;

  • Cabal Conditioning, because 5 card discard for all opponents (with Golos on the board) seems quite beneficial;

  • Reckless Endeavor, if you have another good card on hand and is hoping to cast both;

  • and Behold the Beyond, to stack your hand. I think Storm Herd should be one of the three in most scenarios.

With Emergent Ultimatum I'm theorizing that most players will not allow Storm Herd to be cast. Unless of course they have a board wipe, which is unfortunate. If they will not allow you to get the pegasus army, this leaves you with two cards to cast. Some interesting combinations are:

With Behold the Beyond, I think the primary goal should be to cast Storm Herd. I think some good combination to stack are:

The budet is ~100$ total, max 2$ per card (with exceptions). I use Cardkingdom prices

Suggestions are welcome :)

NB: Yes, Golos is not legal - but this is a jank deck! Consult with your playgroup before playing this

This seems a bit better. It does at least provide more total creature power.

OUT: Elemental Masterpiece

IN: Feral Incarnation

This removal spell seems better, doesn't it?

OUT: Rain of Thorns

IN: Violent Ultimatum

I'm not sure the cards in the card-bounce category are any good. Additionally I don't like that Spinal Embrace only deals with one target, and I'm not sure Worst Fears is fun to play. You know, like what are the logistics? Should I switch seats? And what if I'm clueless about the cards on hand? I wouldn't really want to spend unnecessary time catching up with the target players game state..

To swap in for these, I found a better bounce spell, some cool destruction / removal spells, another ramp, and a potentially interesting utility spell.

OUT: Chronostutter, Set Adrift, Swirling Torrent, Spinal Embrace and Worst Fears

IN: River's Rebuke, Rain of Thorns, Necrotic Hex, Verdant Confluence, and Behold the Beyond
