3-1 FNM again —July 4, 2015

Another good night at FNM and it showed how durable the deck can be even when the gods of fate choose not to be kind with the draws and cards.

Match 1, Mono-Red (2-0). This one surprised me a bit. Game 1, on the draw, I had to mulligan down to 5 and even then it was a horrible hand, but I didn't want to go to 4. My opponent absolutely pummeled me and had me down to 1 life and I almost scooped. Then they flooded and I killed them in two turns. Game 2, after sideboarding in the Feed the Clans and the Hornet Nests, it wasn't even close.

Match 2, Mono-Black (0-2). Again, my draw sucked, went to 6 and was still just mediocre at best, but hung in there for a close game 1. I didn't really have much to sideboard against this deck since my sideboard for control decks is focused on Blue (Mistcutter Hydras). Lost Game 2 similar to Game 1. Learned a lot though. This black deck had 20 removal spells...all the usual suspects (Heroes Dowwnfall, Bile Blight, Drown in Sorrow, Crux of Fate, etc). Looking back, I realize I needed to play this similar to other control decks. I should have sideboarded in Feed the Clan and prepared to extend the game, getting in my shots when I could. I'm not going to get the "knockout punch'' against this type of deck. Extending would have got me deeper into my deck and got out more Deathmist Raptors and Den Protectors.

Match 3, Sultai Midrange, (2-1). Lost a long Game 1. Once an opponent gets an Ugin out, it doesn't go well for me...lol. However, after sideboarding in Mistcutter Hydras and Terra Stomper, Games 2 and 3 went much better.

Match 4, Red/White Aggro, (2-0). I didn't expect to win game 1, but pulled it out. Game 2 was a slugfest since they had good life game and I had sideboared in my Feed the Clans. Huge life swings...lol. I eventually won because they needed pumps to keep up and eventually ran out of them.

Overall it was good night and demonstrated one of the great things about this deck...that it's very resilient even when I don't get good draws. I didn't get many turn 1 Elvish Mystics, hardly saw a Surrak all night, and never got a Nissa (had to double check my deck to make certain she was still in there...lol). My Deathmist Raptors seemed to be hiding all night as well. The fact that I went 3-1 was very pleasing :-)

I'm excited about one Origins card in particular, which I think will fit very well into this deck...Managorger Hydra. For one, trample is very powerful in this deck as it makes the pumps much more effective. But the fact that every spell cast by either player pumps it up, plays perfectly into this deck. I'm going to start play testing it with proxies this week to see if it's as sick as I think it's going to be. Not sure what I'm going to take out but Nylea is definitely one. I feel that it'll probably be a combination of other cards...probably one each of Reverent Hunter, Boon Satyr and maybe a Deathmist Raptor, Nissa, or Den Protector. Play testing will probably reveal the best options.
