This is a R/W token deck that focuses on ETB damage in order to pressure your opponent until you win. I fully believe this deck to be capable of being competitive at the FNM level, but I would advise using b/w tokens at a larger event.
Card choices explained
Lands
I have chosen 24 lands, as dropping
Purphoros, God of the Forge can be very important turn 4 against several midrange decks. I also bring in
Hero of Bladehold in the side, so having access to my land drops every turn is crucial.
Instants
Lightning Bolt - Easy 4 of, this card can act as both a removal spell and a way to finish your opponent off in the later stages of the game.
Path to Exile - One of, if not the best, removal spells in modern. Easy 4 of.
Raise the Alarm - cheap, and can be used to surprise block something like
Dark Confidant
since it is instant speed.
Secure the Wastes - A one of, this card is a mana sink that gets insane when combined with
Impact Tremors
and
Purphoros, God of the Forge.
Sorceries
Gather the Townsfolk - This is intended as a late game drop because of the astounding potential that fateful hour brings. WIth fateful hour and
Purphoros, God of the Forge out, your tokens will do ten damage purely from entering the battlefield!
Lingering Souls - Largely considered the best token producer out there, and for good reason. Flying spirits are practically unblockable in modern, and they can rack up some serious damage. Being a r/w deck it might seem like we can't make best use of this, but fear not! Our plethora of fetches will grant more than enough opportunities to fetch our single
Godless Shrine.
Spectral Procession
- A fantastic token producer. Playing this with
Impact Tremors
out makes it a token producing
Lightning Bolt. Talk about value.
Timely Reinforcements - Great anti-burn tech, which is a bad matchup for us. This card loses a lot of usefulness in the later stages of the game, but offers us insane value if played turn three. Imagine a turn one
Lightning Bolt into turn two
Impact Tremors
into turn three
Timely Reinforcements. You gain 6 life, get 3 tokens, and they take 3 life just from that one spell alone!
Creatures
Purphoros, God of the Forge - This card is
insane against decks that are slower to take off like various midrange decks that we can stall against. Every token entering the field turns into a
Shock. If that weren't enough, it even acts as a late game mana sink to surprise your opponent!
Enchantments
Impact Tremors
- Such a beutiful card, and it fits in such a flexible spot. This card adds incredible value to every token producer played from this point on, oftentimes finishing the game through ETB damage alone.
Intangible Virtue - Sometimes ETB damage alone just isn't enough. Because of this, we have this anthem to boost our tokens to deal damage. Vigilance means our tokens can dish out the damage and still be free to block as well. Because this deck focuses on ETB damage as well, our tokens attacking aren't as important in a different variant of tokens, so we can block more freely, buying time for Purphoros to shock our opponents to death.
Sideboard
Engineered Explosives - This card can be used against decks like Merfolk, Elves, 8Rack, and Bogles, which recently did very well at Worlds. We can even set the sunburst charge up to 3 should we need it with the single
Godless Shrine in the main.
Rest in Peace - Good against podless decks,
Living End, and grixis decks.
Celestial Purge - A good option against many decks. It can take out
Blood Moon and
Keranos, God of Storms
.
Rending Volley
- Great against merfolk and twin. Countered? Not today.
Stony Silence - Great against a lot of decks that use artifacts like affinity or Tron.
Timely Reinforcements - Suck it burn.
Chalice of the Void - Set to 0 against amulet bloom and set to 1 against bogles and infect.
