Sisay’s Chains

——Primer——

This version has been abandoned for Sisay’s Chains (cEDH) because it is too susceptible to disruption and adding in protection reduces turn 4 combo chance making it non-competitive with other top tier cEDH decks

Intro:

The banning of Paradox Engine was a tough beat to Captain Sisay , no other commander or deck was hurt worse, than Sisay, in cEDH from this ban.

In an attempt to bring Captain Sisay back at a competitive level to cEDH, I have developed Sisay’s Chains (cEDH). This deck is an extremely consistent turn 5 kill and over 50% chance to kill on turn 4, without interaction. This deck and the combo is only possible thanks to the Planeswalker “Legendary” rule change.

The requirements to combo are very low, mana dorks and Captain Sisay . These low requirements allow the deck to aggressively London Mulligan to achieve playing a turn 2 or turn 3 Captain Sisay and comboing off t4 or t5. I have achieved t2 wins with godly hands, so that is also possible.

Roughly 50% chance for turn 4 finishes (before first mulligan) and 80% chance for turn 5. Working to get consistency of Turn 4 wins as high as possible to compete with faster combos. With recent changes, turn 4 finishes are up almost 20% from my initial build. Double fetching with Sisay ( her) has helped improve turn 4 kills.

Challenges:

Largest hurdle seems to be interaction from opponents while attempting to go off. I have added in some STAX staples to improve parity with faster combo and slow interaction.

I’m considering abandoning the combo on turn 4 plan for full on STAX with Gaea’s cradle breaking parity and allowing us to combo through the STAX, just on a later turn. This would free up a bunch of slots for more interaction ( Veil of Summer ), STAX, and Staples ( Sylvan Library ).

Ramp into Captain Sisay as rapidly as possible. Cross your fingers you get to untap with her...

If you get to untap with her start counting your mana production as if you had Gaea's Cradle in play. If you can hit 32 mana:

(27x + 4x + 1x)

with 2x Nissa, Genesis Mage +2 and 2x Gideon, Martial Paragon +2 you are ready to combo off. If you can untap Captain Sisay or you have drawn Nissa, Genesis Mage / Gaea's Cradle you can combo this turn. Otherwise pass your turn and fetch Gaea's Cradle on your opponents endstep. Gaea's Cradle is almost vital to combo off so it is a big risk to pass turn with it in play...

Captain Sisay + Nissa, Genesis Mage + The Chain Veil + Gideon, Martial Paragon + Karn, the Great Creator + Surrak, the Hunt Caller + Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

  1. Green Sun's Zenith is ramp on T1 with Dryad Arbor .
  2. Manlands (i.e. Mutavault ) net +4 mana while executing the main combo.
  3. Incubation Druid nets +5 mana during the combo if you can activate her adapt and still play Nissa, Genesis Mage . You need 9 mana minimum from other sources (excl. Incubation Druid ).
  4. Having a combo piece in hand is a good thing, makes the chances of comboing early higher. Nissa, Genesis Mage is the best combo piece to have as it allows you to go off in the same turn you fetch Gaea's Cradle , or vice versa. Other pieces allow you an additional fetch after you play The Chain Veil , like Garruk Wildspeaker and Mox Amber , which can allow you to access 32 mana easier.
  5. Having either Concordant Crossroads or Thousand-Year Elixir in play allows you to skip Surrak, the Hunt Caller in the combo meaning you need only 28 mana to combo off.
