I've recently gotten into pauper, so that I can enjoy a larger library of MTG cards, but with out the price tag of modern. I started out by playing stompy, and I really enjoyed the format as well as the community. I found myself actually chatting with my opponents on mtgo and enjoyed playing vastly more. One night, I got destroyed with the combo of Nip Gwyllion + Edge of the Divinity, and decided this should be the basis of my own brew. I really like playing janky combos over just playing the most powerful cards in the format. Synergy is preferred to power for me. I've been playing with this brew in the Just for Fun room, and I've been doing quite well as I learn the deck. I'm looking to take the next step to move on to player hosted events. I would love any advice or suggestions!
Here is the card break down:
Instants:
Beckon Apparition
Cheap trigger to transform Nightsky Mimic. The instant speed helps a ton! If you need to defend against a big beater you can transform Nightsky Mimic during your opponent's turn. Also, this is killer against any black removal that asks you to sacrifice a creature. Instead of giving up one of your creatures loaded with a ton of enchantments, you can call up a token instantly and sac him. Also, you can stop a dredge or a delve and have an extra token after.
Unmake Kills everything for good with exile, and it works at instant speed.
Enchantments
Edge of the Divinity Biggest buff in the deck. A Giant Growth for my creatures that sticks around for future turns.
Pillory of the Sleepless
is a more expensive
Journey to Nowhere
, but it works here. Triggers nightsky and often gets through though last few points of damage I need to win. Before adding this card, I played
Journey to Nowhere
and lost a few matches where my opponent was at 1 or 2 life, gained board advantage, and came back to win. Paying the extra 1 mana has helped big time.
Ethereal Armor With a ton of other enchantments this can make my little guys BIG. O yea, and first strike too.
Hyena Umbra
Protects us from removal and buffs the armor.
Creatures:
Mourning Thrull Triggers Nightsky, evasion, lifelink, Edge of the Divinity target... ugly yet useful.
Nightsky Mimic Major wincon, yet can suck. I have won most my games with her since I added her later in the deck construction. She's can be a powerful card, or an expensive 2/1. That's what I like about the card through... synergy over playing the most powerful cards in the format.
Nip Gwyllion started my love for this brew. With edge she is a turn 2 4/4 with lifelink... sweet!
Tithe Drinker
Trigger for nightsky, edge target, and her extort ability has won me a few games!
Sorcery:
Read the Bones The format is dominated by Delver decks with massive card advantage. This card helps fill my hand late game with the cards I need.
Castigate Hand disruption that works awesome against all the combo decks, and it triggers nightsky.
Land:
Scoured Barrens Slow land, life gain, dual.
Orzhov Basilica Slow land, bounce Scoured Barrens for life, dual, double mana.
Sideboard:
Disfigure
Kills Delver of Secrets
and many other threats.
Gods Willing bring in vs burn or any deck with straight up removal. Scry is cool too.
Pillory of the Sleepless
add more of these when your opponent doesn't have access to bounce or reanimate effects.
Unmake Add more facing creature heavy decks or slow bounce.
Nihil Spellbomb is for the new Gurmag Angler and Hooting Mandrills decks and works well with
Beckon Apparition
.
Thank you for any help or advice! I love pauper, and I'm looking to take a home brew to player run events and be able to hold my own. I know card advantage is this deck's biggest weakness, but it can be powerful and a winner. BTW sorry for the name... it just fits.
