Maybeboard

Welcome, welcome! Markov Manor awaits.

“Judgment without hope.”

In The Beginning - Early Game

This deck is meant to be a casual Vampire Tribal experience for Edgar Markov lovers (and haters). Lacking in expensive tribal staples and infinite combos, this deck wants to swing vampires and be able to continue playing after one or more board wipes.

Casting a few cheap vampires like Viscera Seer and Dusk Legion Zealot, early ramp cards like Sol Ring and Arcane Signet, and some draw spells or enchantments like Black Market Connections or Skullclamp is the key to ensuring domination. This deck can be slow, or it can be very fast. Versatility will certainly be your ally.

Reveal With Fire - Mid Game

Without a huge amount of ramp and excessively powerful creatures, your opponents’ boards may begin to look more than threatening. Utilize an array of spot removal like Vindicate and Path to Exile to remove the greatest threats and carve your path.

Without much haste, your vampire spells need to be resilient in all situations. Drawing cards from Welcoming Vampire and Twilight Prophet, continuing to establish threats with Edgar, Charmed Groom  , and becoming massive with lords like Stromkirk Captain and Legion Lieutenant solidifies eternal combat. Play your cards aggressively — but wisely — and then turn them sideways!

Let There Be Light - Late Game

Chip damage and life drain can be easy and fun early game, but ending the game, especially against multiple opponents, is the truest challenge. Powerful spells can turn a few small vampires into lethal threats. Casting Mirror Entity, Coat of Arms, and/or Shared Animosity can outright destroy opponents and win the game.

If your opponents have created seemingly-impossible barriers towards your success on the battlefield, annihilate their hopes and dreams with strategic one-sided board wipes like Olivia's Wrath and Ruinous Ultimatum.

Strength In Unity

If all else fails, Edgar Markov can turn the tide of the battle and win the war. Hastily buff your vampire army and seize control of the battlefield. Claim your ultimate victory through vampiric domination!

If you’ve made this far, thank you so much for reading! Please let me know what you think of the deck in the comments. This is my first-ever EDH deck and I’ve put a lot of blood (ha), sweat, and tears (and money) into it. I would also like to note that this is a non-competitive, non-hyper-aggressive Edgar Markov build that is focusing more on thematic tribal elements than anything else. Would you play this deck? How would you improve this deck? What is your favorite form of vampiric domination? Leave a comment and have a great day!

Updates Add

This update is much sooner than I thought it would be, but with an increase in play and playtesting, I decided it would be better to get it done sooner rather than later. This update focuses on toning the overall theme of the deck instead of being split between hyper-aggro, life-drain, and go-wide massive vampires. I had an upgrade phase where I thought I had to be as hyper aggressive as possible without cutting some of my favorite cards, but without fully devoting the deck to the strategy, I was suffering to find consistency in my games. I want to focus on thematic vampire tribal synergies rather than being overly competitive while still being able to be aggressive and resilient in longer games.

Add:

  • Shadow Alley Denizen: Another card I cut thinking it wasn't a good enough one-drop to keep. I decided that even though cards like Vampire of the Dire Moon have killer keywords, they don't affect my board as much as I'd like. Therefore, this card got added back in to make sure that vampires I play make vampires I already own much more difficult to block.
  • Forerunner of the Legion: Another card I cut (are you sensing a theme here?) thinking it was too slow. Now I see that even though the tutored vampires goes to the top of the library rather than to hand, knowing I'm going to draw a Malakir Bloodwitch, Twilight Prophet, or Champion of Dusk makes it feel a whole lot better.
  • Boros Charmfoil: I wanted to have more board-wipe protection and this card does it wonderfully. Despite being in my splash colors (White and Red) I think that this card's versatility will help my deck shine, my board live through pesky board wipes, and maybe even finish off a player!
  • Unbreakable Formation: Yeah yeah I know, I cut this card thinking it was bad. Anyway, more board wipe protection is good. Period. Additionally, if my opponents are tapped out, I can cast it on my main phase to deal insane damage.
  • Night's Whisper: Did I cut this card originally? Yes. Am I proud of it? No. Am I atoning for my past mistakes? Yes. Are you getting tired of me adding back cards I previously cut? But seriously, card draw is good. Hit tweet.
  • Read the Bones: I did not cut this card originally and then add it back for more card draw because I needed it desperately. I'm not lying. Do not check the previous deck updates.
  • Painful Truths: An excellent draw spell that should generally be able to draw 3 lose 3 life. I don't have the most competitive mana base in this deck, but I should have all my colors and drawing 3 cards for 3 mana is fantastic.
  • Nomad Outpost: "Baby come back, you can blame it all on me. I was wrong and I just can't live without you." *Ahem* Anyways, I needed more lands and even though a tapped tri-land is slow and does nothing else, it's still better than most budget lands for this deck. I'll likely end up cutting it again in the future when I get better lands, especially since I already have Savai Triome, but for now it's good.

Cut:

  • Iroas, God of Victory *list*: I have held onto this card for so long mostly because it's expensive (in real money), but the time has come for me to acknowledge that it's in my splash colors and I honestly don't like seeing it in my hand. I could run Dolmen Gate, and I might end up running both of these cards in a future hyper-aggro build, but for now, it's time to say goodbye.
  • Knight of the Ebon Legion: It's a vampire. It's a one-drop. It gets bigger. What's not to love? Well, in my non-hyper-aggro build, it doesn't affect other vampires or the rest of my board the way I want. I already have enough decent cheap vampires to create an army, so small vampires that don't contribute to the Legion are getting kicked.
  • Cliffhaven Vampire: I decided to really cut back on the life-drain theme and also this combo Cliffhaven Vampire + Exquisite Blood . It was unrealistic to pull this combo off without tutors and the cards were painful to topdeck on their own. Hopefully the deck will feel a little more focused without this card slowing it down.
  • Vampire Cutthroat: Another one-drop that's good, but not that good. One day, hypr-aggro, one day.
  • Pulse Tracker: This guy is still tracking my pulse as we speak. Kinda scary. Much more suitable for hyper-aggro.
  • Mentor of the Meek: This card seemed like good card draw, but ended up being consistently more expensive than I wanted it to be. Trying to play vampires and pay an extra 1 felt bad, so it was time to go.
  • Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord: This one makes me sad. he was my first vampire planeswalker. This Sorin has gained me a lot of life and resurrected some sweet vampires, but he's contributing too much to a life-drain theme that I'm no longer supporting. Yes yes I know I have Exquisite Blood + Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose and Cliffhaven Vampire + Exquisite Blood but I can trigger those with better things than a four-drop planeswalker that is technically playing to lose. I'm not crying, you're crying.
  • Valakut Awakening  Flip: I don't know what it is, I just really dislike cards like these. Maybe I love all my cards too much and don't want to discard, so I'd rather excessively draw, but either way, I was never really happy to see this card.
  • Utter End: I love this card. I love spot removal. I have removed a lot of important things with this card. However, exiling and instant speed aren't mattering as much in my playgroup to justify paying four mana for it, and since I've added some other removal spells, this one is getting cut.
  • Whip of Erebos: Another card I love but can't really justify keeping anymore. Lifelink is great, but not that great in this deck. The reanimation ability is nice, but not for four mana and a tap, so it's getting cut.
  • Exquisite Blood: This card hurts to cut, but see reasoning for cutting Cliffhaven Vampire. It's too slow, doesn't do enough on its own without the combo pieces, and doesn't make sense without tutors. I kept Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose in the deck because his activated lifelink + life loss ability can do a lot of damage on its own, making him viable even without a combo like Exquisite Blood + Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose . I will likely add this in when I finally add cards like Vampiric Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, and Demonic Tutor, but for now it needs to go. So long, friend.
  • Evolving Wilds: I love my foiled RIX promo Evolving Wilds, but since I got a Fabled Passage, I really don't need it anymore. I'm planning on getting more aggressive lands (see Maybeboard) so this one definitely needs to go.

Thank you all again for reading another update! Please let me know what you think and I hope you have a great day!
