The Bloody Truth About Vampires

The traits of modern-day vampires are pretty well established. They have fangs, drink human blood, and can't see themselves in mirrors. They can be warded off with garlic, or killed with a stake through the heart. Vampires are highly sensitive to sunlight and therefore only go out at night. Other traits of vampires include unnatural physical strength, enhanced healing powers and the ability to fly, with the method of flight being through either natural or magical means.

Vampires can range from being mindless predators to sophisticated and intelligent nobles. Some, like Edgar Markov, are aristocrats. But before he became the founder of the Markov bloodline he was an aging human alchemist, experimenting with ways to prolong his life and the life of his only grandson, Sorin. With famine sweeping the land, the old alchemist Edgar searched for a solution that could help the starving families feed themselves. The answer was a brutal one. To undergo a ritual that would cause some of the people to feed on blood. It would provide sustenance to those few, reducing demand for the failing crops, but it would also cull the overall population, reducing the number of hungry mouths to feed. And thus Vampires were born on Innistrad.

With his blood magic experiment, Edgar succeeded at finding a way to extend his own life. He anointed Sorin with the same vampiric state. However, when he finally turned his grandson the trauma of the transformation caused Sorin's Planeswalker spark to ignite. Sorin soon left Markov Manor, the plane and his grandfather behind.

As the Markov bloodline spawned other bloodlines, Edgar remains the prestigious forefather of all vampires. With a powerful Vampiric Legion at his disposal Edgar seeks to conquer and subjugate all of Innistrad.
