Sideboard

Here we are with another super generic UWR Control list intending to ruin the combo lists that will be cropping up upon the release of Aether Revolt. We run plenty of countermeasures against various combo decks while still being critically capable of dealing with aggressive lists as well as the different mirrors.

Matchups and Sideboard Plans

  • UWR Copy Cat: This matchup is, more or less, a control mirror. Now, it is worth mentioning the two balancing factors. For the most glaring difference and one that is a true struggle in Control vs. Combo/Control matchups such as this is that the combo deck can go from an empty board to instantly killing the Control deck. This means that, so long as it is remotely possible for our opponent to snag that win, we must assume they can and will attempt to do so. So, our opponent runs counterspells, removal spells for our small creature-base, and can stomp us with a furious speed that can little be preempted. How do we WIN?! As for how the matchup is skewed in our favor, the slots that the Combo deck uses to make its combo possible dilutes the controlling aspects, making ours the better of the two at control (which one would assume quite obvious, but is worth pointing out). So, you can afford no mistake. However, if no mistake is allowed, the game is largely skewed in our favor. Keep your countermagic primed, let Baral die when the CopyCat Player wants to blast him, slow his role, and calmly, carefully establish a clock (yes, even Baral, Chief of Compliance can create a clock). = SB Plan: -3 Harnessed Lightning, -2 Radiant Flames , -1 Fumigate, -1 Blessed Alliance. +2 Dispel, +2 Negate, +1 Fevered Visions, +1 Quarantine Field, +1 Authority of the Consuls
  • Very little of our removal can effect the combo, so it gets sideboarded out. Both Shock stay in, but we don't bring in the other two copies because it does less than our other sideboard options in this matchup. To put it bluntly, it is not our best sideboard option. It is also worth noting that, if your opponent's deck contains 4x Saheeli Rai, 3-4x Torrential Gearhulk, and some number of Nahiri, the Harbinger, Shock is not what we want to answer the question. In fact, Shock ONLY answers the combo. However, spells like Negate stop both the combo and other Planeswalker spells, as well as winning counter-wars and stopping Glimmer of Genius which is a key spell on both sides of the board.

Updates Add

Ran some more tests against GB Snakes and UWR CopyCat. Considering an extra Negate in the SB because it is so instrumental against the latter of the two lists and costs as little as Dispel while Baral, Chief of Compliance is on the board. The SB option is also key against the mirror and the GW Tokens lists that keep popping up. Now, I fear that matchup for the slew of Planeswalkers it runs and I'm hedging my bets that the deck will get pushed out of the meta because GB Snakes has great game against it.
