OVERALL STRATEGY

Game 1 : Make most if not all opponent's removal dead. Apply pressure or gain time with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver and Kiora, the Crashing Wave. Control the board until you can cast Garruk, Apex Predator or Ugin, the Spirit Dragon to take over the game.

Game 2 : Surprise opponents by including creatures in your 60. If they took out their removal (which they most likely will), they're gonna have a bad time.

THE MAINBOARD

Creatures

  • 4 Satyr Wayfinder makes it possible to run fewer lands than traditional control decks. It fuels the graveyard for a very early Murderous Cut or Dig Through Time. It also puts a funny pressure on other control builds that eventually need to have an answer for it, but in most cases it chump blocks to gain some time and an additional card in the graveyard.
  • Planeswalkers

  • Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver is at it's best on an empty board state. In other scenarios she just gains some time and saves some life points.
  • Kiora, the Crashing Wave her +1 is good when the opponent has only one threat on the board while her -1 nets a card and ramps
  • Garruk, Apex Predator is a win con with his tokens or he can be used to destroy a creature and gain life if control is not established yet.
  • Ugin, the Spirit Dragon completely closes games against decks that do not have an answer for him.

  • Removal

  • Sultai Charm can remove creatures, destroy enchantments or dig for answers while putting two cards in the graveyard. Awesome card, a good reason to run Sultai!
  • A mix of 2x Bile Blight and 2x Ultimate Price gives the deck early interaction against aggro. Bile Blight is crucial against abzan aggro and jeskai tokens, while Ultimate Price still contrinues hitting some high end threats.
  • Hero's Downfall to answer planeswalkers or creatures.
  • Crux of Fate to stabilize and gain some sort of card advantage.
  • Thoughtseize to create some holes in opponent's strategies.

  • Card Draw

  • Dig Through Time is in my opinion the strongest card of the deck. Satyr Wayfinder makes it very easy to cast, I've even managed to pull a turn 3 Dig Through Time!.
  • Anticipate smooths out the early game, I like calling the card ''mini dig'' :P .

  • Counter Spells

  • Disdainful Stroke takes care of pretty much every important thing the deck wants to counter.

  • SIDEBOARD

Now this is where things get interesting. Opponents have seen no creatures and just a bunch of planeswalkers and usually conclude that their removal is dead, they're wrong...
Note that all creatures ''dodge'' Stoke the Flames , which is very important.

    Creatures

  • Rakshasa Deathdealer comes in against control, or can also come in on the draw instead of Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver or Kiora, the Crashing Wave.
  • Tasigur, the Golden Fang comes in every game 2.
  • Dragonlord Silumgar comes in against decks that run creatures or planeswalkers you'd want to steal!
  • Sidisi, Undead Vizier comes in every game 2 and can exploit a Satyr Wayfinder to tutor a much needed card.
  • Silumgar, the Drifting Death comes in almost everytime also.
  • Spells

  • Drown in Sorrow, Pharika's Cure and Feed the Clan come in against aggro strategies.
  • Negate comes in against control, Jeskai and Sultai (decks that run counter spells of their own).
