A rough beta for a stall deck. The idea is to take Azor's Elocutors and successfully meet their instant win condition With Detain effects and other stalling methods. Failing that, the use of flyers and detain effects can allow for victory by Knock Out.
Obviously, the key part of this deck is to pull out and successfully use Azor's Elocutors. Detain effects from spells such as
Martial Law
and
Lyev Decree
will stall threats indirectly. Creatures such as
Archon of the Triumvirate
and
New Prahv Guildmage
who can trigger their detain effects frequently will do exactly that. As for creatures such as Azorius Justiciar and Lavinia of the Tenth, that's where Venser, the Sojourner comes in. With his +2, I can flash in and out any one-time detainers and have them stall the board even longer. If I find that I need to go on the offensive, his -1 can let me slip by the cracks. Regardless of the strategy, his ultimate can help me clear the board of threats permanently.
Sans Vesner, this deck was thrown together with Return to Ravnica block. As such, I believe that there are cards in other sets that would greatly benefit this deck. I'm hoping for some suggestions on how to improve this concept before I actually create it. While I prefer to use less expensive cards, I can be flexible if a good argument is made for some of the more pricey options.
Edit (3/4/15): The deck is finally finished. I was unable to find any copies of Azorius Signet, but I decided to had
Prahv, Spires of Order
and see how its second ability works with the Elocutors. I also got my hands on Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. Her +1 will help stall any non-creatures my opponent uses, and her ultimate can lead to endless detain/silencing shenanigans. Now I just need to test this deck in an actual game, and it is set to go. Fortunately, I will be meeting with fellow players tomorrow, so they will help with the testing. I feel no fear. It will be a momentous night.
5/4/15: While the deck did okay, there was room for improvment. I decided to upgrade the deck to a Legacy deck and add some comspiracy cards: Swords to Plowshares for removal, and Brago, King Eternal to help trigger ETB effects. Also stuck some new dual lands in the deck in order to help with mana fixing. It's looking nicer already!
