Control in Modern is a little different. I've learned that the cards and combinations are powerful enough that you cannot allow your opponents to have a long game.
For a control deck to be successful, it has to have a way to end the game swiftly. I've chosen the combination of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Restoration Angel
which together creates infinite angels with haste that attack for the win.
This is not the fastest combination available in Modern, with many decks capable of winning on turn-4. This deck hopes to survive an initial assualt using burn, a variety of counterspells, and path to exile.
It also does not have to win with the kiki/angel combo. Lightning Bolt + Snapcaster Mage
is still one of the best value combinations in Modern, and Celestial Colonnade gives the deck reach.
One of the greatest benefits of the colours is the excellent sideboard options. The biggest surprise is
Sulfur Elemental
which has proven itself to be excellent in an environment lead by Lingering Souls. It also has worth against decks using Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Kitchen Finks, and Voice of Resurgence tokens. It also pulls pesky 4-toughness creatures like Loxodon Smiter into Lightning Bolt range.
Stony Silence is mostly for affinity, although it does come in against blue Tron decks. Keranos, God of Storms and Thundermaw Hellkite come in when we expect a longer grindy matchup. They're great topdecks, and that's what you want playing against jund/junk.
I've found the decks best matchups to be Storm, Affinity, and Burn. Infect, Bogles, and Splinter Twin are all beatable, though closer to 50/50.
Junk is a more difficult matchup, although I've found that games 2 and 3 go much better as long as we can get the density of threats in the deck high enough. I like to take out cards like Mana Leak and add in anything that I'd like to top-deck later in the game. Previously I was using Wurmcoil Engine but found that Junk's Path to Exile to be a liability.
8-rack feels unwinable. The blue tron deck is pretty deadly as well. I don't see either of these decks a lot, however.
