A new version of a BUG list I have been developing to take advantage of the power of Assassin's Trophy in a controlling list. Win Conditions are simple: control early and midgame, then slam Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Garruk, Apex Predator, and attack through with Creeping Tar Pit or Lumbering Falls. There a lot of the typical control spells, including Snapcaster Mage, as well as a general control package Mana Leak, Logic Knot, and Cryptic Command, with Dissolve and Disallow in as well. Disallow is useful in being Modal: You can counter a spell, you can stop a troubled Triggered Ability, or even an Activated ability. The main way to handle early game control is to hand hate in the way of Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize, the usual culprits, as well as Liliana of the Veil, then go to the midgame control with Cryptics, Leaks, and Knots. Creature removal comes in the way of Fatal Push Abrupt Decay, the Assassin's Trophy play, and To the Slaughter. Liliana is meant as a two-pronged attack, in creature removal and hand hate. Mass removal comes in the way of Devastation Tide and Damnation. Early other plays, and even mid-to-late plays, Opt is a good thing to run, where we can potentially hit a D Tide of of a Miracle cost, or find our answers. Search for Azcanta
is a singleton, which helps find threats or other plays early game, fills the yard for Logic Knot or Snapcaster, and sets up the draw. Liliana, the Last Hope is another potential win condition for us, where her Emblem rolls the game fairly quickly.
As a suggestion, Liliana, the Last Hope was moved to the sideboard, Dropping a Ceremonious Rejection and Adding Kiora, the Crashing Wave to the main.
The sideboard isn't a 100% list, but it handles a lot of the usual suspects in the format right now. Leyline of the Void is meant to stop our opponent from Graveyard shenanigans including the Dredge, HollowVine, Storm, and even KCI combo, Collective Brutality is meant for Aggro/Burn/or Storm lists, Ceremonious Rejection is to deal with the Tron/Affinity/Hardened Scales/KCI matches, Negate also helps out in a lot of matches, even the UW control mirror, Nature's Claim is to deal with things like Blood Moon or Opposing Azcantas, Seal of Primordium is somewhat of a catch-all, since a lot of people don't want to play an artifact or enchantment into it, another To the Slaughter (good against the UW control with Jace or Teferi, Hero of Dominaria or Celestial Colonnade. One Engineered Explosives is a catch against decks like Humans, where an EE on 2 is disastrous for them, and a Sorcerous Spyglass Helps to keep activated abilities in check, while also allowing a peek at their hand. Cyclonic Rift is a VERY powerful removal, where it can be played on 2 to remove a troublesome permanent, or it can be cast for it's Overload cost to upend the opponent's board. Dark Salvation is like Secure the Wastes in that we can get a MASSIVE amount of Value in the late game. the synergy between the zombies created can pair nicely with Liliana's emblem.
The lands are 7 fetches, 4 Polluted Delta, 2 Misty Rainforest, and 1 Verdant Catacombs. All are able to find our Shock Lands, and we can also find our basics off of them. The Creeping Tar Pit and Lumbering Falls are our manlands, as a mirror of Jund's Raging Ravine or the Celestial Colonnades from UW. We have Watery Grave to give us our Black OR Blue sources, a single Breeding Pool as one of 3 Green sources, we have 4 Basic Island, 3 Basic Swamp, and 1 Basic Forest. The other Utility we have for troubling lands is Field of Ruin. It can get rid of a Tron Land or another problem (including the aforementioned Colonnades) land, and it helps us fix mana.
