I actually ended up taking out Altar of the Brood to add in a couple Bident of Thassa and Rogue’s Gloves. I feel like the card draw is going to be more important in this style deck where i want to get things out as fast as possible.

Chief and Revoker are good suggestions, but Chief isn't really in style for the deck, and Revoker is more of a sideboard style card.

Really glad I keep checking this everyday I plan on running this deck at fnm tomorrow and will be more than happy to share the results. I just came back into standard after seeing the fate reforged and ugin... Since ugin ties in so well with nicol bolas (mtg lore based around nicol bolas is the best haha) I couldn't resist finding a deck that utilizes his abilities so well. I will most definitely enjoy playing this :) glad you put in the card draw mechanics. +1

Some1WhoPwns, Thanks! I just realized that the card draw would help the aggro keep going, and that (if i wanted) i could even Ensoul Artifact my Bident of Thassa so that it worked itself.

Feel free to share the stats of how it goes for FNM! :)

At this point i've gone for a good amount of blue in the mainboard, and that's a good alternative to Hewed Stone Retainers.. so yeah that actually would probably work better as a two of. o.O

Illusory Angel.. seemingly good, can be a trap card.

Hewed Stone Retainers is as well.... BUT... Colorless... Easier to get away with (weaponsmith...again)

But regardless, I would advise playing the original intent first, cockatrice.. whatever... THEN make the changes once you feel the real flow of it.

I'm gonna end up trying both versions (with and without Illusory Angel) at FNM and Saturday morning with a bunch of friends who have every deck type i'd like to work against.

I'm not too worried about losing the Weaponsmith proc that i'd get with Hewed Stone Retainers though, mostly because there are still 22 cards, and 5 abilities i can use it's free mana toward in the mainboard (without the Retainers).

I'm considering Singing Bell Strike, any thoughts about it?

It's not bad, definitely has potential to slow down an enemies board, but not as much as counterspells.

KaedynCross how it's holding up turn 2- 4 without Ensoul Artifact ? like, in therms of board presence

Fairly well, though i do have 3 Ensoul Artifact mainboard. The ramp lets me work pretty quickly, and the card draw gives me more to work with.

I've been researching about this type of deck and the results were not always really great when I didn't draw an Ensoul Artifact early on. But the way you've built this one, it seems to work. +1 for t2 artifacts. I will try to build something around it. Thanks!

so i built the deck you made and played it in some games and here's what i came up with.... its really good at ramping in 2 mana 2 get your things out... only issues i had was drawing the wrong things.... countering creature spells and dealing with flyers. Will tweak it some more 2 figure out some other things but i do love the deck and will see what i can do 2 make it better and more fun 2 play ;-)

I really want to put counters on the main deck. but just don't know what to take off.. :(

If you were going to put counterspells in the main deck, i would suggest taking out the two Rogue’s Gloves and putting in either two Stubborn Denial, or two Negate.

As a side note, I'm bringing this deck in it's current version to the Preliminary Pro Tour Qualifier in my area on February 21st. I played this at FNM (which ended up being Saturday morning sadly), and it did insanely well (1st place).

The only thing i decided to change was taking Triton Tactics out of the Sideboard, and replacing them with Perilous Vault for match-ups that got a little out of hand with the amount of board presence my opponent could put out (aka, crazy Temur crap).

Side Note 2: The store across the street from me is a very small store without a judge, and the store in the next town was running a two-headed giant event for FNM. So, i'll have to wait until this coming Friday to be able to play there and get post-able results for the deck.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon didn't help me at all. 20+ matches and I couldn't even cast it.

KaedynCross says... #17

Bad luck? I've cast him in at least 1/3 of my matches that i've played. I sat around for about 12 hours playing magic yesterday and some playtesting Friday and i found him pretty useful (especially for the board wipe).

i've been playing Clever Impersonator instead. it seems to work fairly well. mainly against mardu or monogreen devotion. if not, you could just copy your 5/5 Darksteel Citadel or Ornithopter

February 1, 2015 7:27 p.m.

KaedynCross says... #19

I'm failing to see how you would copy a 5/5 Darksteel Citadel, or why you'd ever bother to copy an Ornithopter.

Call me crazy, but i don't really fancy spending 4 mana to copy a 0/2 flyer, and if you read Clever Impersonator's text, it says "You may have Clever Impersonator enter the battlefield as a copy of any NONLAND permanent on the battlefield".

Darksteel Citadel is still a land.. and Clever Impersonator also doesn't copy Aura's/Enchantments/Etc that are attached to a creature.. so copying your ensouled Ornithopter is about as good as spending 4 mana to Lightning Strike yourself twice in the face.

I COULD see it against match-ups where you could copy an opponents Planeswalker or other powerful permanent, but there isn't much in the deck that i would personally use it on (other than Scuttling Doom Engine's, or a Soul of New Phyrexia perhaps).

psicorapha says... #20

i'm such a noob. done some research about "Copy", and you're right. but anyway, you could copy a doom engine or oponent's stuff for 4 mana though.

February 1, 2015 7:47 p.m.

KaedynCross says... #21

It has potential, but it would probably be a sideboard card. In the mainboard you'd run into scenarios where you'd have nothing good to use it on for the mana cost. As a sideboard option it gains some traction though, especially if it was used against decks using very heavy creatures, or even a lot of planeswalkers.

Wow, i'm an idiot, playtesting the deck made Rogue’s Gloves feel a little lackluster, but still useful. I was just looking around cards to see if there was anything that really jumped out at me, and TADAAAAAAA.

Thassa, God of the Sea.

Yeah. That's a card. That's a really, really terrifying card in this deck.

Funny you say that, I was also considering Thassa, God of the Sea Definitely worth putting her in imo :) that scry every turn is to good to pass up.

February 3, 2015 9:21 a.m.

KaedynCross says... #25

Not just the scry, the ability to say "Hey, so you know how you could block before? Yeah, you can't do that now."
