....Sultai the name you are looking for is Sultai. Grixis is the Black Shard. Sultai is the Black Wedge.

=) elonth, I am aware of its official name. However, the color combo doesn't have a set list within modern (part of the reason I was drawn to it) and Green Grixis gives those familiar with the meta a better one-glance idea of what this deck does, as opposed to Blue Jund which runs Lily's instead of a permission suite. Interesting thought though, if it were more creature heavy and ran CoCo, would it be Black Bant?

the deck looks good but i noticed you have a lot of things that hurt you but no life gain to counter it.

tysrob53, in a deck without counterspells, it would be much more of an issue than it has been. If I smell Burn or Affinity, my fetch sequences and spell orders change accordingly. My meta has a pretty healthy mix, but if it leaned towards aggro, I would consider courser or even baloth in the main. Thing is, green is my splash, so scooze can't be activated the turn it comes into play more often than not, and courser can be painful to cast. Any ideas I'm missing?

oh ok fair enough, and yeah at my meta most of the decks are aggro or faster style of midrange

also if you can support it i would suggest running Counterspell instead of Mana Leak

Believe me, tysrob53, if counterspell was modern legal, i would have the full playset included. Probably foiled out. Unfortunately, deprive is as close as it gets in our format.

Call it sultai because that is what it is. Otherwise looks like an interesting list I came to a simular conclusion for my personal build that green was just a splash color.

@Twanicus you don't seem to understand how Deck naming works. When you call a deck "Black bant" it is not because it uses creatures. Its because the deck is primairly Bant (W/U/G) and splashes black for some important cards. Your deck is SULTAI. It is not "Grixis green" because it runs a similar strat to Grixis Control in modern but uses green instead of red. it is SULTAI control. The key defining words are things such as "Delver, Control, Storm, Waste not" key cards or concepts strategies that define the plan or idea of a deck. not color.

Wow, of all the things I was trying to accomplish with this project, a discussion of naming protocols never even occurred to me. Look, I get where y'all are coming from, but slapping the name Sultai on a deck and running it into the field is a great way to be summarily ignored. Trust me on this, you need a hook. I have no reason to check out some generic version of Jund or Jeskai just taking up space on the modern board, but if there is a clever enough name attatched, I just might. It brought you in here. It put words on my wall. It even earned me an upvote or two. It also immediately distinguishes my build from jund-like decks, whether or not my naming criteria is universally accepted.

TL;DR: I appreciate the input, and I mean that genuinely, but I'll be keeping my name. Mostly cuz I like it, but also being told I should change something evokes a very defiant streak in me.

One last addendum: I would consider this more midrange than control, but that's a whole new discussion.

I do agree that this is a midrange list my bug list is control Sultai's Hope. Would you have a better name suggestion for mine?

@ Apakakuta, lol, I don't know how much of a naming savant I am, but I will use what marketing prowess I may have and see what I can do. Give me a day or so, busy schedule and all. Also: your name is incredibly fun to say.

My handle I came up with years ago thank you for that comment.

Also sure, not any extreme rush. I understand busy schedules.

I'm a fan of Deprive myself, but I think you need to either run lands that have synergy with it like Bojuka Bog, or run Bloodghast to get the most out of it.

Twanicus says... #15

I like the idea of synergy, but I find my mana base to be too lean to support additional tap lands, and I can't bring myself to cut any man lands. Same goes for ghast, I love the idea, but I'd be cutting too much power in Bob, Snap, or even Kalitas. The synergy just isnt worth the card advantage/selection. If anything, Kalitas may end up becoming 2-3 grim flayers just to test out, when I finally get around to picking them up. Thank you for the suggestions though.

I've been looking more and more towards Grim Flayer lately myself.

For your problem with the manlands, I think the new Fatal Push will solve your problem.

yes, I am very much looking forward to them becoming legal. Seems like a good time to update build =)

I've had better results with Mana Leak over Remand.

However I will ask how has Deprive been for you?

Apakakuta, Besides the crappy dredge matchup, it has never been a dead card. More than once versus burn it's saved my bum where a remand or leak would not have, and is far better against Tron. The only issues I've had are getting to four mana for Kalitas (part of the reason I switched to flayer) and snapping a two drop back on curve. It comes up occasionally, but I often have a replacement spell in hand anyway, and having it has far outweighed going without. If you try it out, I advise curving out at three max, two if possible, and don't run more than two or three copies.

I was actually thinking of just going up to two Cryptic Command since my removal and Collective Brutality should bridge me to cryptic area.

January 15, 2017 5:02 p.m.

Twanicus says... #22

I've never tested cryptic (step one would be buying them I guess), but that triple blue scares me. I can plan ahead for the , even early game, but I curve so low that even the double black for Lily was an issue at times. It would also seem that adding a certain amount of 4 drops to the curve would require going up to 24 or even 25 lands. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying that's deeper down the hard control path than I am looking to go in these colors.

Sure I'm just at an impass currently and need to decide do I go midrange or do I go control rather than straddling the line between them.

I feel the strength of Jund and Abzan as aggro/control decks (their official classification, btw) is defined by their ability to switch roles depending on the matchup. Burn, affinity and zoo were never meant to play the control game and struggle when they are forced to. (Can't think of matchup examples off hand but you get my point.) Jeskai and Esper have a hard time racing combo when the counterspells run out. By playing BGx, even if we are blue heavy, we have the distinct ability to drop gears and begin punching through when the window opens, or hit the brakes on opponent's aggro when try to do the same. The build you decide on should reflect the meta you're expecting, any clues as to what your LGS is gonna look like?

It varies from time to time I've never had the same matches there yet and I've been a mainstay for about a year. I am there for modern Mondays and FNM almost every time barring severe illness or work keeping me from it.

Name a tier deck I've seen it there even a lot of tier 2 or unpopular decks show up. Jeskai and grixes of all variants, Abzan, Jund, Abzan company ( milera combo),delver decks, hate bears, fish, combo you name it I've seen it.
