Non-Humans (1)

So, when I sat down to brew this deck, I definitely underestimated it. I had never played against it before, but once I started brewing I realized how powerful this deck could be. With the commander both providing efficient card selection and cheating of mana costs, Winota can be incredibly explosive, so lets get into it:

Ideally you will have a non-human creature or a spell that makes non-humans in your opening hand, and since most of them are sub-3 CMC, you should have no problem getting them out ahead of Winota. In addition, because Winota is a removal magnet, you only want to play her once you have a non-human ready to attack right away. The best early plays are Raise the Alarm, Legion Warboss, and Goblin Rabblemaster, as each of these can represent multiple tokens very early to start the engine. In addition, Thopter Engineer and Loyal Apprentice are low-curve humans that can produce non-human tokens early as well. Once 1-2 non-human creatures attack and you find a human off the top, this deck spirals very quickly.

As you can see by looking through the decklist, nearly all of the humans in the deck either come with non-human tokens, a powerful enter the battlefield ability, or a useful triggered ability. In addition, despite many creatures such as Mangara, the Diplomat and Mentor of the Meek not really being creatures you want to attack with, Winota grants them indestructible the turn they come down so they will likely live long enough for at least some of those triggers to go off.

This deck pretty much wins through combat damage (obviously), and it is very important to not run out of gas. There are a few ways to protect yourself from board wipes, including Angel of Glory's Rise, Gerrard, Weatherlight Hero, and Anax, Hardened in the Forge. Any one of these can allow the deck to bounce back from a board wipe, and having one of them on board will often deter people from even casting board wipes.

One weakness of this deck is running out of gas if the game goes for too long, as you can run out of humans in the deck to continue the value engine. Fortunately, I have never had games go so long that this becomes a problem, but it could in a meta that is very board wipe heavy.
