I added Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord . He should have been in the first cut...

To be honest you may want to move away from guild gates if possible and get duel lands, woodland cemetery doesn't work unless you have a swamp or forest on the field so at the minute only 8 of your lands would trigger it. whereas duel lands are both types of mana.

What Phion means to say is you should cut the Guildgates for Overgrown Tomb s, which are shocklands. Dual Lands refer to the ABUR Duals, such as Bayou . He's absolutely right, though. The odds of that Woodland Cemetery coming in tapped is too high, having Shocklands means being able to hit the right colors more consistently and faster. Lands coming in tapped slow the deck down and allows your opponent to have an advantage over you.

I would also like to suggest Varolz, the Scar-Striped . Giving each creature scavenge means that you're able to use your graveyard as a utility to add counters, rather than have it sit there and harm you (i.e. if an opponent is using Deathrite Shaman ). With Corpsejack Menace , those scavenge counters would be doubled.

Speaking of, Deathrite Shaman would be very useful in this deck. He gives you sustain as well as extra damage and ramp. He can also mess up an opponents strategy if they're using dredge or reanimation.

Hope this helps.

@ Cobthecobbler and Phion. Thanks for the suggestions, I did scrap the guildgates but I went back to basic lands instead. I am trying to keep the real life costs of this deck down.

Valroz looks excellent but when i consider that 60% of my creatures have 0 power in the graveyard and another 10% being worth 1 counter for 3 mana he just doesnt seem worth it.

Deathrite Shaman is one I have considered and will continue to test with.

Well, what you could do is put in some Diregraf Ghoul s so you essentially get max 4 counters for 1 mana. That could prove to be devastating for your opponent. You'll still have mana for other spells and your creatures will be more powerful.

Kalonian Hydra would make it even crazier. I was trying to do this concept in Standard, but this is much better. The Bioshift is key, especially with that Fungal Sprouting . Just attack with a mass of tokens, and whichever one doesn't get blocked gets a huge pile of counters on it. Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord is a cool guy as well. Anything to transform those counters into damage no matter what is a good deal. +1 for a fun idea. :)

Very solid deck for the low cost. Consider Ring of Kalonia on your sideboard for some cheap counter spawn and trample. It is a three drop as opposed to the one drop Rancor but I can see it coming in handy if they are playing some heavy control spells to keep your creatures tapped. Also, Ring of Kalonia costs about ten cents right now, so that would drive your costs down significantly.

Kalonian Hydra would be a nice card in this deck. A little expensive though!

I like Kalonian Hydra ALOT. It would get absolutely nutty with Corpsejack Menace . I wont put it in this deck on the internet because I likely wont purchase it for this deck in real life. I got a steal on the Primordial Hydra s. I do watch new releases for effective cards but I try not to cheese out on all the best rares. This deck is built Modern legal because thats what my playgroup decided we would build to, I only ever play casual games.

@Sparkalark. Ring of Kalonia is very interesting... It is a little slower and less survivable than rancor but it is also more permanent given that the counters stay even if the ring is destroyed. It also would be doubled by Corpsejack Menace . I will probably test with them. Good suggestion!

actually dual lands refers to all lands that produce two types of mana, the ABUR dual lands, are called exactly that.

I would run Flesh / Blood over jarad, it lets you fling without actually sacrificing the creature.

No Kalonian Hydra ? WTF!!!!

KSULongneck says... #14

@Wolfninja Yea, at thirty bucks a pop I can afford to run this deck thru the hydras I'm already using. Kalonian Hydra is better but at this point he's just overkill. This deck routinely gets these hydras in the high double digits and sometimes triple digits.

ALL THE HYDRAAAAAAAASSSSSSS!!! Hydras are by far my favorite creature type. Kalonian Hydra , Vastwood Hydra , Feral Hydra ? Throw in red for Apocalypse Hydra and Savageborn Hydra ? I would definitely suggest some elven ramp for flavor and efficiency. Llanowar Elves instead of Birds of Paradise and drop Overrun for Elvish Archdruid . red would be fun and create some more options but would also raise the deck price due to the fact that you might need some shocks, buddies, and filters. +1 from me.

@323Dimitri. Vastwood Hydra is definitely on my radar now. Thanks for the suggestion. I like the BoP because it allows me to run fewer swamps and have more predictable mana generation.

Overwhelming Stampede could be effective in this deck... :P

If you are willing in an investment i would suggest removing black all together. Doubling Season would be a valid replacement for Corpsejack Menace . Then red would be a possible but not a necessary thing.

KSULongneck says... #19

Overwhelming Stampede would be sick in this deck. I promised my playgroup I wouldn't do that.

@Dimitri. Corpsejack Menace is a big body in addition to being far cheaper than Doubling Season and it also hits the board a turn earlier. That's a big deal to Primordial Hydra which grows geometrically. I get other utility out of black as well and I use very little token generation. I would be paying more in cash and CMC to play a card that I only really use 1/4 of so that I could splash a color that would only end up doing the same stuff. I use black for in a slightly different way. Corpsejack just fits my gameplan better.

September 11, 2013 6:21 p.m.

Well you could also throw in a Necropolis Regent have some flying and a bonus for hitting. This is a really cool deck though and hydras are awesome maybe you could get some monstrous creatures with Theros

Maybe include Increasing Savagery ?

Blessings of Nature could be sweet. 8 counters with Corpsejack out, for one green mana.

I'd probably up the Essence Harvest s too, instead of Fungal Sproutings. I mean a ton of the fungal things are cool and all, but I dunno. Essence Harvest seems better, and it is also a good answer if you lack trampling hydras at the moment. Could also make it possible to run something else instead of Overrun.

Have you thought about sideboarding Mistcutter Hydra ? If anyone plays control in your play group it can really mess with them, and having haste is just a bonus.
