Some thoughts on Vampire Hexmage ... I recommend getting a couple Pithing Needle s for your Sideboard.

I would also look into faster ramp.... Utopia Sprawl is a great turn 1 or if you wanna do turn 1 Arbor Elf and turn 2 Utopia Sprawl .... that's 4 potential mana turn 2. If you wanna go bigger, you can play Garruk Wildspeaker on that turn 2 and then have more land untapping shenanigans!! The Birds of Paradise doesn't seem as important and if you can sport the Overgrown Tomb s, it makes an Arbor Elf just as good as a Birds of Paradise pretty much.

Garruk Wildspeaker is great because he can untap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx so if you go the devotion route, a turn 3 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx would produce all the mana you need to get the big guys out with sufficient counters. If you don't like the idea of Arbor Elf or Garruk Wildspeaker , look into Voyaging Satyr as an untap for your lands.

Your goal should be a turn 3 Corpsejack Menace and some hydra. To help with this, I would look into some green tutors. Green Sun's Zenith , Summoner's Pact , or Chord of Calling would all work for this, it is just a matter of how you wanna play the deck. I don't think you have enough creatures to go Chord of Calling and make use of the convoke (If you go Devotion route, it would be a different story cuz you would prolly have 4 Burning-Tree Shaman s for the devotion boost). Summoner's Pact is good especially if you want to kill on the same turn as you use the spell but I don't think you have the haste necessary for this. So if you are cool with paying the upkeep cost, then it would work just fine. I would recommend Green Sun's Zenith because you prolly won't have to worry about sorcery vs instant speed tutoring and it brings your creature directly onto the field.

I like the deck though and I'm glad you are getting into modern haha

amep Thanks for all the suggestions and commentary.

Of the tutors you suggested Summoner's Pact is the one I've been considering the most. Because its a delayed cost and puts the creature into my hand it allows me a little more versatility considering most of my creatures are X cost 0/0 Hydras.

Garruk Wildspeaker was actually the first choice for this build but I got my hands on a copy of Garruk, Primal Hunter first and got attached to the card draw he allows.

I wont go with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx because I wont go the devotion route. I do use Skyreaping in the sideboard to deal with fliers but I sometimes struggle even to get to 4 devotion to deal with angels. Nykthos would rarely be worth it.

Pithing Needle Is an excellent suggestion. It hoses a lot of creature based combo and It definitely belongs in the sideboard for Modern.

Have you considered Putrefy ? For the one extra green mana, you have no limitations on creature removal that stops regeneration, and the added bonus of artifact removal.

So wonderful! Interested to know peoples record for how big they have gotten their hydra's and on what turn. I've been around 72 power on turn 5 when playtesting it

My record in RL for this deck is in the 1000s with a Primordial Hydra That was around turn 10 against a stasis type deck. Thats when I decided Essence Harvest needs to be in here. More reasonably and more recently a turn 6 164/164 hydra.

I like the deck. Watch out for Grisly Spectacle though. One of the funniest things I've seen in Magic was watching and waiting for someone's Primordial getting up to around 100 counters and then destroyed and milled. The look of disappointment when the match went from a sure win to game over was priceless.

Might want to implement some hexproof options in the sideboard. Maybe some Asceticism 's?

I see what you did here :)

I did very similar things in Standard that is working its way to a GTP spot and has ran over its fair share of FNM's

Golgari "CounterRamp" Hydra's *PLEASE PLAYTEST*

If I could suggest anything, it would be more Kalonian Hydra as he is a corner stone, as well as 2-3 Green Sun's Zenith and 2-3 Courser of Kruphix to help you get to what you need faster.

+1 for mean a$$ Golgari Hydra's!

xGhostx Thanks for the suggestions and upvote. I like Courser of Kruphix but I dont really want to pay for him... More Kalonian Hydra cant hurt but I'm trying to compete in modern so I dont want too many five drops. If I use a tutor it will be Summoner's Pact because most of my important stuff would come into play as a 0/0 with Green Sun's Zenith

Understandable, Was gearing Green Sun's Zenith more towards pulling a Corpsejack Menace at the perfect time or a Kalonian Hydra as the Hydra will still hit the board with 4 counters regardless of how it was cast. but I hear what your saying about Summoner's Pact

And yeah, no one wants to pay the insane price tag that is hitting Courser at the moment. Luckily I picked mine up when they were still cheap lol and they do nothing but sit in my binder lol

add blue (or simic guild gate stuff) to get Vorel the Hull Clad.

Hey I would probably trade out hero's bane for two more Kalonian Hydra and perhaps adding Scourge of Skola Vale he is a bit earlier game and can be used as another Bioshift or to save your counters if a hydra is targeted to be destroyed. You can check out my similar deck Hydra Rampage if you like. Definitely like the deck though +1 and Solidarity of Heroes is a good pick I didn't think to use that one.

Maybe a few Reliquary Tower in case you draw a massive amount of cards off Garruk.

ZombieswithJetpacks Wow! What an excellent and original suggestion. I often find myself discarding a ton of cards after us in Garruks -3. I will definitely be trying out a couple Reliquary Tower

August 18, 2014 1:45 p.m.

amep says... #15

that might give you mana issues. Just do 1 maybe two tops but having more than that could make your draws worse... especially if you really need a forest or a swamp

amep Absolutely true. I wouldnt be replacing existing lands at all. It would replace other cards as a 2-of.

I would add Genesis Hydra and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx MB.

as for the sideboard it's hard to know what to add without knowing the meta but I would start with some kind of combo hate. Torpor Orb and Pithing Needle are a good start. I would keep the mistcutters as they can wreck and blue based control on their own. I would also include Naturalize for Birthing Pod .

again I don't know your meta and how strong it is but be aware that your deck will be slow by modern standards. It's kinda a tron type build so I would look to those decks for other ideas on what matchups will be troublesome and how to best pilot the deck.

over all I like the deck, I love seeing new ideas for modern. +1

Abrupt Decay should be mainboard in here as it will kill most modern played cards. Also can use Maelstrom Pulse to kill token armies and walkers. Definitly intresting snd i think you could replace the elves for the theros 0/3 defender with hexproof. Shes going to be a tough card to remove and will allow you to coninuely have a source of mana while being a strong blocker that cant get bolted.

How about sideboarding Vastwood Hydra for decks with alot of removal?

Just curious: why not Doubling Season ? Go over the edge, man! :D

September 10, 2014 11:47 a.m.

Silight says... #21

How about some Astral Cornucopia ? Turn three card that doubles your available mana at no cost to you with only one drawback, on turn three you can only play monocolored spells because Astral Cornucopia will only produce a single color. Keep in mind Artifacts do not suffer from summoning sickness, so that 3x you spend to bring it out is immediately available. This kind of ramping early game will make your comically large hydras much faster.

Silight says... #22

Also, Vines of Vastwood would be a good addition to this deck. With Doom Blade as a staple in so many decks these days, dropping this on the stack after they drop their removal is a really cheap way to counter a spell. The +4/+4 kicker makes it useful even when your playing against something with no removal.

Would you run Maelstrom Pulse?

Love it, +1

December 14, 2014 4:56 p.m.

KSULongneck says... #24

Maelstrom Pulse is an excellent suggestion and not something I had considered before. I will certainly sideboard that given the number of decks running Voice of Resurgence in my local meta.

Not just VoR but a ton of token generation and populate.
