Gp Copenhagen 2017 report —June 1, 2017

Got to play in Grand Prix Copenhagen once again, and was hoping to repeat my succes from last time. Unfortunately that wasen't the case.

At the GP, i was able to face eldrazi players who drew as they've just won the lottery. I just got smushed in all my games against eldrazi, which was a bit unfortunate, since I consider the matchup to be favorable, especially with the chance to white, so i both have Path to Exile and Blessed Alliance. The problem was that i was never able to draw either of them. Chalice of the Void was a real pain in the ass, since i had draws that just played right into the card (1 mana spells and lands).

I also got a unfortunate draw against affinity, where i thought i won the game, with the ulamog i just drew of my Horizon Canopy i played. But then my opponent pointed out, that i wasen't able to cast it, since i already had played the Horizon Canopy, so i couldn't get to the ten mana i needed by playing a land. We didn't get to finish g3 on time, which i thought i would have won, until my opponent showed me, that he had 2 Galvanic Blasts in hand, when the game ended with me being at 9 life. I guess in the end, that was a pretty lucky draw i got with affinity. Also, playing white over red, really hurts against affinity, and i would easily have won the match had i had acces to Kozilek's Return. But to be better against something, you have to make sacrifices

I was able to win over UW control (which most of the time almost fells like a bye), but that was my only win in the turnament. Overall i think i played reasonable, but my draws where pretty bad. The sideboard also, was not perfect tuned, since the one Ghost Quarter in the board was pretty underperforming against eldrazi (they have multiple basics and only needs 6 mana to cast all their spells and only needs 4/5 to operate), plus tron and Scapeshift aren't/weren't that much represented. Especially not at the GP. 1 or 2 Ghost Quarters is a fine number against eldrazi, but 3 is just too much, since the third is basicly gonna do almost nothing most of the time. The Ghost Quarter should just had been another Thragtusk (thragtusk is insane, and was overperforming at the event), and one of the 3 Warping Wails should just have been a Walking Ballista, since Crumble to Dust isen't a much played sideboard card anymore, so countering sorceries isen't that exciting, which makes you only use the exile small creature mode, and Walking Ballista deals with small creatures way better. There's are matchups like Living End and dredge, where Warping Wail is good, but those matchups are already favorable.
