Welcome to the (Golgari) Rock.

With GRN on the horizon and the best removal spell printed in years in GB, it seemed fitting to start my GRN brewing with a GB mid-range deck.

I started the deck with 4 Assassin's Trophy and went from there. Here is a breakdown of the cards:

Creatures Show

Jadelight Ranger is a great value creature for finding land drops or surveiling/exploring away cards you don't want to draw

Golgari Findbroker is another great value creature that blocks fairly well. It can bring back a killed Jadelight Ranger or planeswalker. It also synergizes well with the enchantment removal.

Ravenous Chupacabra can answer a lot of threats by coming down and killing the biggest threat and block another. It also can be returned to hand by Golgari Findbroker. I am considering upping this number to 2-3 but the 4 drop slot is very crowded already.

Plaguecrafter is a new addition that is great to bring back with Findbroker and also is an answer to decks looking to win with Planeswalkers (read: Teferi).

Planeswalkers Show

Karn, Scion of Urza is the card I most enjoyed playing with in the previous standard and is a great card draw engine and potentially a win-con.

Vraska, Golgari Queen is not getting a ton of hype, but I think she is very good. She draws a card and is immediately at 6 loyalty(just like Karn) and can kill some relevant threats like Steel Leaf Champion. Her ultimate is also game winning.

Vraska, Relic Seeker is a very versatile and great walker. Creating chump blockers or attackers that work well with little Vraska's ultimate is pretty good. Her minus gets rid of most trouble permanents and she has an equally game winning ultimate.

Removal Show

Assassin's Trophy is the best card ever printed! hyperbole aside, it's a really good card and it makes tapping out for Teferi on turn 5 much worse since he can now be answered with 2 mana instead of 4 at instant speed. It is not good early game removal (at least in standard). Ramping an opponent into a 4-5 drop a turn early is not where you want to be most of the time which is where the next spell comes in..

Cast Down is now probably the best early game (or late game) removal spell in standard. It fully depends on if there are a lot of legendary creatures being played which will decrease it's value but I'd much rather be casting this to kill a Steel Leaf Champion on turn 2 than Assassin's Trophy.

Vraska's Contempt was the best removal spell in standard last season and will continue to be good. Exiling is normally relevant, especially with graveyard synergies present in GRN, and the lifegain is a nice bonus against aggro. I think it is no longer an automatic 4-of in Black decks but it is still very good.

Dead Weight is fine early game removal. It can shrink bigger creatures. It synergizes well with Golgari Findbroker.

Misc Show

Treasure Map   is a card I really like. The scry is strong and flipping works really well with Karnstructs.

The sideboard is still a work in progress but I think it's pretty good so far. 4 Duress definitely seems right, but feel free to leave suggestions on the main deck or sideboard decisions. It's a new format so it's very possible I am wrong in some of my choices.
