Welcome to my latest standard deck tech; today's deck will be an old Ravnica/Theros favorite reborn. Mono blue devotion has been a popular deck since the advent of the Theros block due to the power and speed of Master of Waves and Thassa, God of the Sea. Since the end of Return to Ravnica's time in standard mono blue devotion has remained absent from the meta field almost entirely. Now with the release of Dragons of Takir the deck has now has renewed appeal with the advent of
Shorecrasher Elemental
and
Cloudform
from Fate Reforged. Below I will explain the process behind my tech and how to go about winning a game.DECK TECH The color theme of the deck is not pure mono blue but a black splashed Dimir devotion deck with splashes of black for side board support cards. The reason for this is that with so many multi color cards and and themes in the current set it is far stronger to splash for the one spells such as
Stain the Mind
or Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver especially when doing so does not affect the mana base when using cards like Polluted Delta and
Temple of Deceit
.
The main board is entirely mono blue so it will operate pre-board like most other mono blue decks;Ensoul Artifact- This deck utilizes ensoul quite effectively using cards like Darksteel Citadel and
Hall of Triumph
to make 5/5 creatures while also creating a in the process. This card in conjuncture with Thassa, God of the Sea can put down a major amount of damage over a short period of time.
Cloudform
- This uncommon from FTR is one of the reasons for this decks revival;
Cloudform
acts as a replacement in function for Nightveil Specter where as
Shorecrasher Elemental
serves as a replacement for its devotion. Even though cloudform replaces nightveil specter as the main flying attacker, the cards are very different and have various pros and cons to each card.
Shorecrasher Elemental
- This is the new powerhouse devotion card for this deck. being a 3/3 for is powerful enough to be used in this build however adding on its ability to "blink"and turn face down is very powerful. This ability allows the card to avoid spot removal spells for a single blue as well as dodge Ugin, the Spirit Dragon's -X ability. in addition the card can buff itselfwith +1/-1 or -1/+1 giving it the ability to hit hard or survive cards like
Stoke the Flames
or Anger of the Gods. This card combos well with master of waves not only for its devotion count but for the fact that its anelemental and will be buffed by master of waves allowing for it to be pumped additional times.
Stratus Dancer- A very strong two drop with versatility; can be used as a negate, an aggro creature, or in conjuncture with
Cloudform
for extra power.
SIDEBOARD The side board of this deck is where the black splash comes into play; by adding black to the deck it opens up many more powerful options to help control or power through hard match-ups.Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver- One of the more powerful planes walker in standard Ashiok provides a very powerful turn three play against decks like mono green devotion, or G/W mastery of the unseen decks.Disdainful Stroke- A powerful counter-spell that can be brought in against any deck that plays large spells such as U/B control or big abzan decks.
Erebos, God of the Dead- This card is very powerful against several match-ups, its card advantage makes it very useful in control match-ups and its ability to limit life gain make it hard for G/W mastery decks to gain large amounts of life.
Jorubai Murk Lurker
- Provides life gain in Blue to any target creature as well as provide a 2/4 wall for blocking. When playing this card early game be careful as it will die very easily without having done much in certain match-ups such as against red it is often better to wait to play this card to maximize its use.
Pearl Lake Ancient
- Used in control match-ups as it is powerful finisher and is very difficult to remove
Profaner of the Dead- boarded in against token match-ups an Azorias heroic match-ups to remove masses of creatures while leaving your board state unaffected; works well with
Shorecrasher Elemental
by using it as a mana sink to up its toughness to hit more creatures.
Read the Bones- one of the best cards to board against control decks.
Stain the Mind
- used for decks that use cards that are particularly hard to deal with such as ascendancy decks, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon decks, or siege rhino decks
