Played a series of games against Frank using 2 decks.
Deck 1 was a B/W midrange lifegain deck featuring Fiendslayer Paladin, Vampire Nighthawk, Blood Baron of Vizkopa and Obzedat, Ghost Council. The deck had a great plan, but Frank was unaware that Blood Baron's protection from white meant he could not put his own white enchantments on him, or target him with Ajani, Caller of the Pride. The games were well played on his part, some were close and he did all he could to stop the Hydra's- i think he won a game or two. While his Banishing Light was well placed, I was surprised to see Oppressive Rays instead of Pacifism or Oblivion Ring, and he ran no Doom Blade-type creature kill.
Deck 2 was the Modern Event Deck, may have been slightly modified, not sure. The deck's core is fast tokens like Raise the Alarm, Lingering Souls and Spectral Procession buffed with Intangible Virtue, Glorious Anthem and Elspeth, Knight-Errant. When he was on the play and drew well, i was destroyed. When I was on the play and had a Birds of Paradise or two, there was no stopping the Hydras. On the play it was a race. My on-the-draw sideboard solution served me well- to bring in 4x Lightning Bolt, 2x Mizzium Mortars and 2x Scavenging Ooze, and side out 2x Garruk, Caller of Beasts, 2x Savageborn Hydra, 1x Garruk Wildspeaker and 3x Primordial Hydra. I had not planned on his sideboard Blind Obedience, and it lead me to realize my deck lacks interaction with non-creature permanents such as enchantments, very uncommon for me- an oversight likely due to how excited i was over the Hydras! I may drop 2 or more planeswalkers from the sideboard for at least 2x Bramblecrush.
Thanks for the games Frank, see you in the finals on friday!
