Sideboard

Maybeboard

This is my budget Mono-White Human deck based around the Heroic ability. It runs a bunch of low-cost creatures with the ability, plenty of auras to pump them up, and some instants to protect your guys.

The Breakdown

  • Favored Hoplite - This 1/2 for one might not seem like much, but he is actually very strong if yiy can manage to get some auras on him because of his Heroic ability preventing all damage done to him for the turn. The two toughness is also nice for blocking early creatures/tokens. The only actual turn-one play the deck has, but it's a good one.
  • Hero of Iroas - Most of the aura spells in the deck cost two mana, so he basically lets you play twice as many auras per turn if your hand allows it. He has Heroic so he can be a decent target for your aura spells as well.
  • Phalanx Leader - This two-mana 1/1 gets out of control so quickly. Get an unassuming group of creatures on the board, then slap down the Leader and some auras; he'll turn a board of Weenies into a top-notch team of beaters very quickly thanks to all the +1/+1 counters he generates. He should be the target of most of your spells once he hits the board.
  • Sram, Senior Edificer - The real MVP of the deck, and he also happens to be the only non-Human creature in the deck. His ability can allow your board get out of control very easily, especially when used in conjunction with Hero of Iroas since you will be able to play most of your auras for one mana while keeping your hand full of cheap cards that ideally will draw you more cards.
  • Fabled Hero - Double Strike means you don't even need to pump this guy up that much before he becomes a serious threat to your opponent's life total. Slap Angelic Gift on him for an even bigger threat.
  • Ethereal Armor - This deck runs a lot of enchantments, so the bonus from this card can get very big very quickly, and the first strike just makes your guys that much more dangerous in combat. Plus it's the only one-mana enchantment in the deck, at least without a Hero out.
  • Angelic Gift - It may not directly pump your creature's power/toughness, but giving the target flying and replacing itself in your hand makes this card too perfect for this deck to pass up.
  • Bonds of Faith - I love this card because it pulls double duty in the deck, providing any of your Humans with +3/+3 after Heroic, or making sure a big creature can't stop your attacks or beat your face.
  • Conviction - This card was really one of the driving forces behind the deck. A reusable way to trigger Heroic on your dudes, and it only costs two mana to bounce it to our hand and replay it if you happen to have a Hero on the board. Plus it gives whatever creature you play it on a nice boost to their toughness, which can help keep them alive.
  • Spirit Mantle - A cheap aura that makes our creature good on offense or defense. It also pumps them up a bit to boot!
  • Gift of Orzhova - This enchantment gives our creature flying and lifelink, and +1/+1, which can help stabilize our life total.

Please let me know what you think about the deck, and if you have any thoughts on the cards in the Maybeboard or suggestions of your own I would love to hear them! Thanks!

Updates Add

I want to have a transformative sideboard, and I'm finally happy with my list. The plan is for the deck to swap out a lot of the aura spells and go super wide with creatures post-board.

  1. Hanweir Militia Captain  Flip is just a two-mana 2/2, but once he flips he becomes very powerful in a deck that is looking to make creatures; not only does he have power and toughness based on the number of creatures you control, he makes a creature every turn starting the turn he comes in!
  2. Launch the Fleet is a card that could potentially fit in the mainboard of this deck, but I decided to keep it on the sideboard to maintain the element of surprise.
  3. Phalanx Leader and Hope Against Hope because I want to finish out the playsets in the mainboard.

The sideboard also includes cards for certain matchups, as they often do.

  1. Revoke Existence permanently deals with pesky artifacts and enchantments for a measly two mana, albeit at sorcery speed.
  2. Pithing Needle takes care of anything with bothersome activated abilities.
  3. Tormod's Crypt deals with anyone that tries to get into graveyard shenanigans.

I still need to test this transformational sideboard plan, but I have a feeling it is going to be hilarious to play no matter what.
