Sideboard

Maybeboard

Like all Esper Dragon control decks, the goal is to disarm the opponent with counters and removal. Then - with the help of card-drawing instants and scry - play one of the three win conditions (Ugin, Dragonlord Ojutai or Slumgar, the Drifting Death).

I really like the deck, but I'm looking for ideas to fine-tune it. My main concerns are: is there too much removal and are there enough counters?

Also, should I second Pearl Lake Ancient be added to the sideboard due to the increasing popularity of control in standard?

My first tournament with the deck. I am still waiting on 4 Temple of Enlightenment and 2 Bile Blight to come in the mail, so I needed to replace them with 4 Tranquil Cove, 1 Anticipate and 1 Dissolve .

The Temple of Enlightenments are reflected in the current decklist. The Bile Blights were replaced by an Anticipate and Dissolve in the sideboard.

Finished 2-0-1. Won the first two rounds before mutually splitting in the third - although officially I placed first.

Round 1: Abzan Whip, Win 2-0

I demoralized this opponent. He wasn't able to manage anything more than a Whip of Erebos in one game, and one Siege Rhino in the other that didn't survive past the end of the turn he played it.

Round 2: U/B Dragon Control, Win 1-0

This matchup was a battle of attrition, but a guaranteed victory as long as I didn't commit any misplays. Having Dragonlord Ojutai was the difference - as well as Thoughtseize.

Round 3: Esper Dragon Control, Draw 0-0

Knowing that with a split we would both be the top 2 - and we were willing to split the total prizes of those places - we agreed on a mutual split.

We did play one game for fun (mimicking a game-two scenario so that we could test our sideboards). I did not have any white mana sources from turns 8-the end, and was on the back-foot from being on the draw and being Duress'd. After 40 minutes, I was forced to concede this casual game.

I expect this to go differently in the future once I acquire 2 more Thoughtseize and receive the 4 Temple of Enlightenment, and have more luck with my mana (due to increased scry effects).

All in all, this was a good showing - especially knowing that I will have a stronger deck in a mere few days.
