Athreos, God of Passage transients the world of the living and the dead. Navigating both worlds at will, he holds the key to life and death.

The deck aims to defy the law of nature by making what's dead come back to life (read: my creatures) and what's alive, perish (read: opponents' minions).

Abusing Athreos' ability is central to the theme of the deck, featuring a myriad of ways to manipulate the graveyard and bring back the dead for my beck and call, befitting of the name Recurring Nightmare.

Athreos is Indestructible.

This makes Athreos, God of Passage extremely difficult to remove.

As long as my devotion to and is less than seven, Athreos isn't a creature.

When Athreos becomes a creature, he is susceptible to popular creature removals like Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile. Having a sacrifice outlet allows me to turn him "offline" by sacrificing sufficient creatures to reduce my devotion below 7.

This versatility makes Athreos extremely difficult to deal with once he hits the field.

Whenever another of my creature dies, return it to my hand unless target opponent pays 3 life.

Abusing this ability is the central theme of the deck and many of my creatures are more than willing to hit the graveyard knowing they'd rise again.

Targeting the "right" opponent is important if I want to get back my creatures repeatedly when they die.

Opponents I often target include:

A) Players with low life totals as they can't afford to pay the 3 life;

B) Players who I can strike a deal with (e.g. Let me return my Leonin Relic-Warder and I promise not to target his permanents with it);

C) Players who, together with me, are trying to keep a dominant player in check; or

D) Players who're unaffected by the creature I'm trying to bring back (e.g. A player playing a creatureless deck is more likely to let me return Plagurcrafter to my hand).

An Orzhov control deck at heart, this deck strives to win by out-valuing my opponents over time.

Sign up in Blood if:

  • You're a fan of graveyard manipulation, necromancy and reanimation;

  • You prefer a Commander who is hardy and more resistant to removals;

  • You love casting cute little creatures who are ever ready to dive into the graveyard for you; and

  • You enjoy posting "tough questions" to your opponents ("would you return this to me or take 3?").

Turn back now if:

  • Dealing with Life and Death ain't your thing;

  • You're a "Johnny" at heart, who enjoy taking big turns while cruising to a combo finish; or

  • You're a "Timmy" at heart, who prefer summoning big ass Angels and Demons over cute little 1/1s and 2/2s.

The deck aims to accrue incremental value over time by abusing Athreos, God of Passage's ability to repeatedly return dead creatures to my hand or to recur them from the graveyard through the dark arts of necromancy (i.e. myriad of recursion spells and abilities).

Athreos, God of Passage's ability is a death trigger. It synergises extremely well with Teysa Karlov's ability, making opponents pay 6 life if they do not wish to return the creature to my hand.

A classic and popular combo in many graveyard recursion decks.

In a nutshell, Reveillark's leave play ability returns Karmic Guide from the graveyard to play and the latter's enters the battle field (ETB) ability helps recur Reveillark.

With the aid of some sacrifice outlet/combo pieces, we can set up a loop:

1) With Viscera Seer - Brings the card we want to the top of the library via continuous scrying

2) With Ashnod's Altar / Phyrexian Altar - Infinite mana (colorless / colored)

3) With any free Sac Outlet and Elenda, the Dusk Rose - Infinitely big Elenda or sacrifice Elenda to make infinite 1/1 Vampires with Lifelink

4) With any free Sac Outlet and Aven Riftwatcher - Infinite life anyone?

5) With any free Sac Outlet and Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat - Drains all opponents to death

6) With any free Sac Outlet and Grim Haruspex - Draw cards to your heart's content

7) With any free Sac Outlet and Leonin Relic-Warder - Permanently exile all artifacts and enchantments our opponents own

8) With any free Sac Outlet and Sin Collector / Tidehollow Sculler - Exile all instants & sorcery or nonland cards from our opponents' hand

9) With any free Sac Outlet and Grave Pact / Dictate of Erebos - Opponents sacrifice all creatures they control

Leonin Relic-Warder and Tidehollow Sculler, when combined with any sacrifice outlet, can permanently exile an artifact, enchantment (in play) or nonland card (in opponent's hand) from the game.

This is possible because both creatures have two abilities - One that triggers on ETB and another that triggers when they leave the battlefield.

Using Leonin Relic-Warder as an example, the trick is to make Relic-Warder’s leaves-the-battlefield ability trigger and resolve before the enters-the-battlefield ability exiles anything.

Here's the break down of how this work:

1) Leonin Relic-Warder enters the battlefield and its first ability triggers. This is when you need to choose a legal target, if any.

2) Now, we need the second ability to trigger before the first one resolves. For this to happen, we need to make Leonin Relic-Warder leave the battlefield by sacrificing it to our sacrifice outlet.

3) When the leaves-the-battlefield ability resolves, there is no exiled card to return (the first ability is still on the stack), so this ability will do nothing.

4) Now when the enters-the-battlefield ability resolves (because abilities on the stack exist independently from their source), it will exile the targeted artifact or enchantment indefinitely!

Play the game of politics and work with an opponent to ping another opponent to death using the Artist and his adorable Pet! As the famous saying goes "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"

This works best when a player (Player A):

A) Has assembled his combo pieces and is threatening to win in his/her next turn

B) Is gearing up for a Massive Strike, capable of taking out one or several players in one combat step

C) Has a combo or mechanic in play that irritates the entire group

Working with an opponent Player B, who is also at the receiving end of the above, and with Athreos, God of Passage in play, here's how the trick works:

1) Sacrifice Blood Pet to add to our mana pool. This will trigger both Athreos and Blood Artist.

2) Target Player A with Blood Artist's ability, making him/her lose 1 life while you gain 1 life

3) Target Player B with Athreos' ability and request that he returns the Pet to our hand

4) Cast the Pet with the floating from Step #1

5) Rinse and repeat until Player A is dead

The above combo works too, if a player is unable/unwilling to pay life (usually cause his life total is extremely low) to prevent Blood Pet from returning to our hands, thus allowing us to loop the above.
