Maybeboard

This is a multiplayer Scion of the Ur-Dragon voltron control commander deck with reanimator package built for 75% commander meta.

Summary

Ramp and keep the board clean using mass removal until 7 mana, cast and protect Scion of the Ur-Dragon by searching for a hexproof dragon if required. Next turn transform to deal lethal commander damage to a high threat player (classical combo involves Moltensteel Dragon). Evasion is unnecessary if the board is clean. If unsuccessful, use graveyard recursion and win through Patriarch's Bidding or Living Death paired with Scourge of Valkas or Dragon Tempest. When in doubt, call Nicol Bolas and make oponnent's hands disappear.

Strategy

Most of the following win conditions assume that Scion of the Ur-Dragon attacks in such a way that he is unblocked. One way to make sure that happens is to play evasion enhancements like Bower Passage or Cover of Darkness. The other is to pay a ton of removal, this deck takes the latter approach.

A few notes regarding the commander:

Many of the win conditions are based on Scion's ability to combine multiple instances of its ability. This usually works as follows:

  1. Put two instants of Scion of the Ur-Dragon ability on the stack.
  2. Have the first one resolve, and put for example Moltensteel Dragon into your graveyard.
  3. Before the second instance of Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability resolves, pay 12 life (less if you have red mana open) and use Moltensteel Dragon ability to give the permanent +6/+0 until end of turn.
  4. Have Scion of the Ur-Dragon become either Dragon Tyrant to kill an opponent with commander damage or Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon and use infect to go for the kill.
A brief summary of this deck's win condition:
  1. Activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability twice.
  2. Search for Moltensteel Dragon.
  3. Activate Moltensteel Dragon's ability 5 times, paying 10 life.
  4. Search for Atarka, World Render and then attack dealing 22 commander damage with trample.

This strategy is mostly used in 1v1 situations with the goal of locking down the gamestate by having the target player discard his hand. This typically wins you the game.

  1. Attack and if unblocked activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability once.
  2. Search for Nicol Bolas.
  3. Deal player damage and watch the opponent abandon all hope.

Pairing this off with Scourge of the Throne can bring an additional player on the verge of tears. Nicol Bolas is also a great candidate to be revived with Goryo's Vengeance on the next turn to make another person's life miserable.

It is also worth noting that Nicol Bolas attacks for 7 damage which makes him a good candidate to end the game with commander damage, but he is just too good for that. Never cross Nicol Bolas.

  1. Activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability as many times as necessary.
  2. Search for Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund (and Scourge of the Throne, Utvara Hellkite, Atarka, World Render etc.) and finish with Dragonlord Dromoka to protect your combo.
  3. Play Patriarch's Bidding and deal lethal damage.

A similar endgame can be achieved with Scourge of Valkas. Note that Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund is a potential liability and in control-heavy meta should be replaced with Dragonlord Kolaghan.

Deck

Comments on card choices by category:

A generic 5 color deck needs to run the following mana sources:

  • 10 fetch lands
  • 10 dual lands
  • 5 basic lands
  • 5 utility lands
  • 5 any color lands

It is also worth noting that Crucible of Worlds which allows replaying the fetch lands from the graveyard.

Alternatives

Honorable mentions:

  1. Attack and if unblocked activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability twice.
  2. Search for Moltensteel Dragon.
  3. Activate Moltensteel Dragon's ability 6 times, paying 12 life.
  4. Search for Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, Scion is now a 10/4 flying creature with Infect.

Use Dream Halls to cast Conflux, cast as many spells as possible while feeding the graveyard with dragons and finish with Patriarch's Bidding or Living Death. One possible combo would look like this:

  1. Activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability as many times as possible.
  2. Search for Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund (and Scourge of the Throne, Utvara Hellkite, Atarka, World Render etc.) and finish with Dragonlord Dromoka to protect your combo.
  3. Cast Conflux, fetch All Suns' Dawn and feed your graveyard with dragons.
  4. Cast All Suns' Dawn and return Conflux to your hand.
  5. Recast Conflux to get more spells and feed the graveyard even more.
  6. Cast as many spells as possible using Dream Halls and finish with Patriarch's Bidding providing haste with Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund or Dragon Tempest.

Conflux can be played in infinite combos but that does not suit the goals of this deck. One can also replace All Suns' Dawn with Eternal Witness or Naya Charm or just play all of them. This combo also pairs well with the ultimate of Sarkhan the Mad who is not currently played in this deck.

  1. Play Aggravated Assault.
  2. Attack and if unblocked activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability.
  3. Search for Savage Ventmaw.
  4. Activate Aggravated Assault's ability and attack again, resolve until total victory.
  1. Attack and if unblocked activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability.
  2. Search for Hellkite Tyrant which will steal the opponent's artifacts. Assuming you hold 20 artifacts you win the game.
  3. On next turn activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability and search for Hellkite Igniter.
  4. Activate Hellkite Igniter ability and pay 2 mana if you have 10 artifacts, 4 mana if you have 5 artifacts, or 6 mana if you have 3 artifacts.
  1. Attach Grafted Exoskeleton to Scion of the Ur-Dragon.
  2. Attack and if unblocked activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability.
  3. Search for Dragon Tyrant and attack for lethal damage with double strike, trample and infect.

A similar combo can be made with Tainted Strike as a surprise kill.

Replace expensive fetch lands with:

Replace expensive dual lands with

Replace any-color lands with: Rupture Spire, Shimmering Grotto and Transguild Promenade.
