Disclaimer:

This deck is designed specifically to work in my semi-casual EDH playgroup. What you need to know about our house rules:

  • Free-for-all Multiplayer
  • No Commander Damage
  • Infinite Combos are frowned upon

Description:

To win this deck needs to survive into the late game. So to survive the early game this deck wants to either play a few defensive cards such as Ghostly Prison or Magus of the Moat or slow opponents down with Rhystic Study or Grand Arbiter Augustin IV. If the board gets too busy we have plenty of Wrath-like effects. Or if there's only 1 annoyance we have some targeted removal as well or maybe we'll just take it with Treachery or Sower of Temptation. This is for multiplayer and since I can't counter every spell cast by 3-5 other players we went light on the Counters. Just enough to keep my opponents worried whenever I leave a bit of mana open. And of course we have plenty of draw spells to keep my hand full of answers.

Now once we have the board under control and our opponents are trying fruitlessly to top deck a win we get down to business. Now this isn't a deck where we win in a single attack. We prefer having our opponents feel helpless as we slowly beat down their life total. All of our bombs have a secondary purpose:

Notable Revisions

  • Removed Several Clone effects. In the majority of games just copying a good creature did very little for the deck. The opponent's original permanent would simply remain better since their deck would have synergies built in for it. So I'd normally just end up wrathing anyways. Rite of Replicationfoil remains because 5 > 1.

  • Removed Grim Monolith + Mana Vault for Mind Stone + Thran Dynamo . Originally I figure these rocks would be used as fast mana and get untapped when I leave counter mana open then counter nothing or did not have a play and bluffed counterspell. But this rarely happened. I designed the deck to always have a play so these rocks essentially became a Lotus Bloom which this deck really can't do much with. For the meantime I'm enjoying the versatility offered by Mind Stone and Thran Dynamo.

  • Removed Brainstorm. This caused a bit of debate among our little playgroup. "It's a 1-mana Draw 3 cards!" they said. Yes it technically draws 3 cards but then you have to put 2 back. Normally you put 2 back you don't want but without several shuffle effects you just end up drawing those 2 cards making for a disappointing next 2 turns. I could add more fetchlands but without mana-ramp and some high casting cost spells I don't really want to filter out too many lands. Or I could add some tutors but with out assembling combo pieces tutors seems kinda useless. I much prefer to either just draw a bunch of cards (Sphinx's Revelation, Treasure Cruise) or have it filter some of the cards (Preordain, Telling Time, Fact or Fiction). Still have Jace, the Mind Sculptor since he offers other useful options.
