Cavern of Souls is better than Island here, just to dodge counterspells.

prosperonight: Many lands could work more than the island, however cavern of souls is very hefty in price.

I like this idea a lot but I wonder how consistently you can get Fluctuator out turn one if you tweaked the deck and spent some more money on it.

I built a deck which is also $20 and can win on turn three easily. Bad Nauseam Mill. I like the idea of your deck its similar to mine because pretty much half the deck is made up of similar cards, you have cycling cars and most of my deck is made of 0 mana cards to play and win with Altar of the Brood.Maybe add some lands that enter untapped? You start off with 7 cards in your hand so you should have a lot of cycling cards.

@ThatBlueMage however Thoughtseize really hurts us, it doesn't exactly fold to it. You can still cycle once or twice every turn till you hit another. If you know you're playing a Thoughtseize deck just mull if your dudes in you hand. Also there's not many Thoughtseize decks in LGC anymore aside from Reanimator eh?

Trade out all Street Wraiths for some Ridge Rannets

That's actually kind of a horrible idea. No offense, but Street Wraith is one of the best cards in the deck because it can get you going because it doesn't depend on Fluctuator.

Also, to turnyouover, i'm running this as my competitive legacy deck at any SCG Event that I go to. Only change is that i'm using the Cavern of Souls and running Cloud of Faeries instead of the bad flyer, and I took out that one pump spell in favor of some Gitaxian Probes. Otherwise, I'll let you know how your deck did whenever I get the chance to play it.

Really cool deck idea. One thing that strikes me is that it actually looks pretty similar to a Legacy Mortal Combat deck. You should definitely add Gitaxian Probe because, like Street Wraith it gives you access to cycling without a mana cost, letting you set up the combo. I think Mortal Combat is actually worth mentioning too, since it gives you another wincon along with your Laboratory Maniac, making the deck more diverse and a little harder to deal with. If you do go the Mortal Combat route, you want to rebalance the deck by pulling out a lot of lands and putting in more cycle creatures, compensating by putting in Lotus Petal and 2 or so Songs of the Damned, so you can just cast Mortal Combat at the end of a long cycling chain and just win. With that configuration, the deck only really needs 1 land in play so you can hit Fluctuator and you can actually straight up win on turn 1 or 2 with a good draw. Regardless, you definitely want Lotus Petal, since even if you don't otherwise alter the deck it lets you threaten a turn 1 or 2 win, depending on your draw.

you could take out the Flame Jet for Cloud of Faeries, Lull, or Miscalculation.
I don't see this deck winning with damage anyway.

When I first saw this deck, I was like "what?!? are you serious?" than I took you advice and deck tested it. I freaked out when it worked. You have my vote.

Frayace: On the deck I own, I use cards like that, however, for tappedout I tried to make it budget and add the cheaper cards. 4x Cloud of Faeries will add like $2.

carlthekatt: Gitaxian Probe can kill me and it prevents me from cycling at instant speed to prevent removal.

This deck is fantastic. I playtested it here and got that turn 3 win.

Have you considered a cheap counter like Daze or Spell Pierce?

It could be insurance for an attempt to counter your Maniac, or them attempting to Path/Swords/Bolt/Spray/etc. in response to the last Cycle added on to the stack killing your Maniac.

Daze for sure as you could play Maniac, go through, put Island back in hand to cast Daze just in case. Especially since Daze would only add about $6.

This deck has caught my attention, and I will be building something similar, even if I only play it casually, I think I can work it, and make it possibly ridiculous. As is, it pretty much is, "get a Fluctuator. Win." I think 3 or 4 of the slots are workable and I'll find out soon enough.

December 12, 2014 6:49 a.m.

This deck has caught a lot of people's attention lol (including mine), but a word to the wise who are building their own versions: You MUST NOT have any more than 6 non-cycling cards in the deck, or you WILL hit a wall when cycling and not be able to deck-out. I understand the desire to add some insurance via counters and whatnot, but just keep in mind that Fluctuator will take up 3-4 of your 6 spots, and ofc Maniac taking one, so just be mindful. Ofc, people will find that out in playtesting, but it's worth a reiteration. I have seen some other interesting builds that run 2-3 Fluctuator with the extra spots doing all kinds of things, but I still feel like this version is the best (although I still believe in Lotus Petal over Island, but that's all a matter of preference).

Mine is going to have alt win con of Tendrils of Agony as a side-in along with the Lab Maniac.

December 12, 2014 7:30 a.m.

carlthekatt says... #24

Cycling is an activated ability on a card and doesn't count as casting a spell, so it doesn't interact with storm, which only cares about spells cast by players that turn. It doesn't even interact with variants of storm like gravestorm on Bitter Ordeal, since gravestorm cares about permanents placed into a graveyard, and cards cycled from your hand are never permanents. So unless I'm missing something big, Tendrils of Agony doesn't work as an alternate wincon. One thing that does is Mortal Combat if you drop some lands to bump up your creature count.

December 12, 2014 6:02 p.m.

Dorotheus says... #25

Yeah. I know that. It was going to also involve dumping an Emrakul to restart, a Children of Korlis to help restart for paying Street Wraith and/or Gitaxian Probe and then just attempt to keep casting one of two copies of Lotus Petal enough times to just Tendril.... but Bitter Ordeal is MUCH better now that you bring it up.
