I don't think 4 lilianas is wise in the current meta. Her sacrifice ability isn't very good against a variety of decks and her discard ability is horrible without bob giving card advantage.
I'm not sure I'd run abzan charm. Whilst it is never a dead card, all of its modes are massively overcosted and really low impact.
Shadow of doubt is cute and all but I don't think it's that fantastic, especially not in this meta.
I would recommend a slaughter pact and more lingering souls. These are both cards that I think are very important on battling aggro decks.
You also don't have enough tectonic edge and fulminator mage to stop scapeshift.

ChiefBell I disagree with you about Shadow of Doubt. I really hate losing that first game to pod, then have to come back 2 games in a row. Its hard to do. And its still a useful card again anyone running fetches or tutors.
I had Slaughter Pact and more Lingering Souls in here until recently. Souls was cloggy, does not fit the rock shell as well as other cards. I still have the 2nd copy in sideboard though. I cut slaughter pact for abzan charm, acts as removal still but gives more options as well. I was thinking the same thing about charm being overcosted though.
As for fulminator mage, its stricltly a budget issue. Im confident it will be in MM2, so i dont want to buy them now. Who knows, maybe MM2 will make its price hit the fan like it did w goyf. Bottom line i just dont want to buy mages right now. Ive got a lot of other decks im working on.
ChiefBell always good constructive criticism with reasons. Thanks man.

I love a classic this-pays-for-my-college-tuition rock deck. What are you hoping Wizards will reprint in the next MM2 set?

Ive built this deck twice now. Sold it the first time and bought a car. I wasnt going to rebuild it, but I realized its just my favorite deck to run, I dont feel as comfortable with any other deck.
For MM2 im hoping for Damnation, and Fulminator Mage, Thats what I need for this. But Ive got several other decks im working on. Need Mox Opals, Blightsteel Colossus Karn Liberated,
What about you man

How does it work? I'm not familiar with the deck, it looks like Abzan Midrange.
January 23, 2015 8:59 a.m.
I feel very uncomfortable about this deck. You have A LOT of 3 and 4 mana creatures and other spells. Against affinity for example, this is going to be very problematic. 25% of your deck can't even be cast until the turn before they win. 10% can only be cast on the turn they do. That's 1 in 3 cards thats ineffective against aggro.
In particular I feel that abzan charm is unsuitable, phy oblit is great but probably just worse than solid old thrun or the value offered by siege. I feel that smallpox is counter productive when you have a great reliance on creatures and an average land count to support them. I feel that path to exile is also problematic and definitely not main board material.
I like where this is going but I think it needs to tighter and leaner. At the moment it's made some match ups extremely difficult unecessarily.

3 and 4 mana creatures? I have no higher count than any list thats placed in a top 8 recently.
Smallpox puts the the game in my favor. It is usually a turn 2 play, and cripples the opponent. I kinda agree on Abzan Charm, it is over costed, but it has so much value. Gets sided out in a lot of match ups though. And i dont see what your issue with path to exile is, especially as a 1-of.

Smallpox in a three colour deck with somewhat questionable fixing is usually not fantastic.
Path is bad in an attrition deck because it just allows your opponent to make more plays than you. It gives them incremental advantage. You have far better options you can use anyway.

Sorry, I thought you had 3 rhino, 1 phy ob, and 1 thrun,
January 23, 2015 1:24 p.m.
As a 1 of i dont usually have any issue casting it. I see what your saying, even if i cast it T2 it requres me to get black sources and maybe not the fixings i need, but still.
One of the high point in my magic playing was this retarded game, that will never normally happen. Was against infect on the play. T1 thoughtseize. They drop a fetch. T2, drop swamp, pass. they go to crack fetch, shadow of doubt. Next turn, they pay 2 for breeding pool, Glistener Elf. My next turn, smallpox. They scooped.
I realize that doesnt nomally happen, but smallpox still FSU.

I'd suggest that you take out meliria, I just don't see what she does to the deck other than yeah, gain life, but what does it do to help you other than that. I'd also put your Abrupt Decays in the side, and replace them with Maelstrom Pulse. That way you don't have to worry about not being able to kill a Gurmag Angler or Tasigur, the Golden Fang
April 5, 2016 3:21 p.m.
@mama_tom melira doesn't gain you any life, and completely shuts down infect. Also, maelstrom pulse is already in the deck. Abrupt decay is debatebley the best removal spell in modern. Thanks for the suggestions though
@Kjartan I traded for 1 and paid 180 for the 2nd copy.

Hey!
Recent decks have been moving away from the 4 rhino / 1 taz plan working on the 2/3 drop slots.
I personally am on 3 rhino / 1 taz and have a full playset of Scavenging Ooze. Why? Because Living End, Thopters, and Abzan Company are graveyard orientated decks, and because scavenging ooze is really good early pressure.
Also if control does become big a 1-of Loxodon Smiter may be worth looking into. I run 1 anafenza and 1 smiter. They're never disappointing because at worst they're disgustingly above the curve, but at best they nerf a respective strategy be it counterspells or graveyard shenanigans.
It all depends on your playstyle I suppose, but I've really, really enjoyed cutting the 3 and 4 drops and going to a playset of scoozes. Deck feels faster, and seems to draw better in the early game.
I would also urge you to test 2-3 Oath of Nissa. Not very good in games where you want to control but in games where you want to aggro the card is absolutely amazing because for just 1 mana it really helps you to cycle through and find those goyfs. Also a T1 oath with a liliana in hand and bad mana means you can cast your lili. It's also another nice thing to do T1 besides discard. If you have an inquisition or seize then they're obviously better, but if you have this instead it basically ensures you can get a really nice threat down on T2. Also multiples feed the goyf because it's legendary.
