They Call Me The Wanderer

Commander / EDH

CallMePetey

First of all, be sure to have this in your background for the full Wandering experience:

Thank you.

Now then, let's get down to the deck.

This deck is based around dropping your commander for free casting, and casting your spells for even more free casting. This deck falls into a category that isn't for everyone, so lemme break it down for you chief.

You'll like this deck if:

  • You like ramping into large spells
  • You like turning dudes sideways
  • You like a chaos-y style of deck
  • You like turning over cards from your library

You won't like this deck if:

  • You like a combo based experience
  • You like linear strategies
  • You like knowing what you're about to cast
  • You don't like creatures

Also, this deck isn't meant to be cEDH, and I'd still want to play this while sitting in a casual pod, hence the lack of counters and absolutely bonkers creatures. I want to keep it fun and entertaining for everyone without dropping bombs from my ~$2k deck on my friends' sub-budget decks.

Now that you can decide for yourself if this deck sounds like something you'd like to try your hand with, let us move on to some key points of this deck.

As the deck is so rightfully named, The Wanderer is our choice of commander. He allows us to attack with all creatures as soon as they come out, due to his first ability. But we're mainly focused on his triggered ability, cascade.

Oh boy, buckle up sonny, because we're going wanderin'.

Cascade: Cascade is a triggered ability that functions only while the spell with cascade is on the stack. “Cascade” means “When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card whose converted mana cost is less than this spell's converted mana cost.

So when we cast our commander from the command zone or from our hand, we get to cast something in our library that costs less than 8CMC. That means the vast majority, if not all of the remainder of the deck, is a viable target for this trigger. I mean, what could be better than casting Maelstrom Wanderer and hitting something like a Pathbreaker Ibex , or a Etali, Primal Storm ?

Oh yeah, I know. Getting to do it twice.

So like I stated previously, this deck is focused on getting our spells for free, or at least at a significant discount. A two-for-one deal, if you will. Our main method of doing so will be the cascade mechanic, which makes it's appearance on a few cards in the deck, such as:
  • Bloodbraid Elf . This fine lady gives us a decent blocker as well as a free cast off of her cascade trigger. Double value!
  • Etherium-Horn Sorcerer . This beastie gives us a good amount of mana for that chance to hit larger spells off of the higher CMC. Plus, as an added bonus, you can return him to your hand to cascade into something else again! Thoughts on adding Didgeridoo
  • Shardless Agent . Again, mainly just a body to block with the extra goodstuff coming from the cascade trigger. It can't hit anything super amazing, but it can hit you some extra ramp or a utility piece in the early game!

Now, I can hear you saying, "Ah, Petey, you only listed like 3 things that cascade! That's not enough to justify anything," and to that, I'd say you'd be correct. But just because spells don't just come out and say "cascade" in their rules box, doesn't mean that it doesn't cascade!

Allow me to introduce to you...

Yeah, that's what we'll call it. Basically, these spells will help us cast even more spells for free (or at a discounted price), including spells that aren't even ours! Lets break it down:
  • Diluvian Primordial . This dude is gonna help us cast some of those big spells that our opponents keep bugging us with. Oh, your blue player played a Ban Me Please ? Cast that bad boy for free and make them get a taste of their own medicine! Someone played a Wrath and the board is looking scary? Clear it off! Lots of situational utility with this guy.
  • Etali, Primal Storm . Oh boy, when big daddy dino comes a'knockin', your opponents can't do much but look at their libraries and hope to Urza that they don't have anything good on top. Etali is definitely one of the better targets to hit with your cascade triggers or your tutor . Just an attack or two from Big Papa can end a game. Try it and see.
  • Rishkar's Expertise . This would usually go into the utility section of the primer, but that second bit on the card justifies it belonging here. Card draw is amazing in a deck like this where once you get to the point where you can cast The Wanderer , you can basically cast anything in your deck. But then, getting to cast a creature for free? Icing on the cake, baby.
  • See the Unwritten . Great card that fits our theme relatively well. We're usually guaranteed at least one creature from our library onto the battlefield, but potentially hitting two bombs from our library at the cost of 6 mana isn't something to raise your nose at.
  • Selvala's Stampede . I just love the _Council's Dilemma_ mechanic, and I'm sure your opponents will too! Whichever option your opponents vote for, you're guaranteed at least one creature from your library, assuming you wanna spin the wheel and see what you get. But then, if your opponents vote _free_, you'll get to cast that big beastie you've been saving or haven't been able to cast yet. Sweet value and definitely on theme.
  • Unexpected Results . This card can lead to some beasties hitting the ground, or can lead to mana ramp. either way, you're getting a random spell from your library, and maybe even getting Unexpected Results back into your hand. Win/win.
  • Vivien's Invocation . This spell is very similar to See the Unwritten in the manner that you get to look at the top few cards of your library and cast a beater for free, with the added bonus of doming something for (potentially) quite a bit.
  • Release to the Wind . I have this card in this section because I want to express how good it is with your commander. You can use this on The Wanderer to get more cascade triggers and therefore hit more good stuff from your library. You can use it on any cascade creature and gain value from it, really. Or you could use it to protect your Big Papa from a board wipe, or whatever. Very utilitarian, but with the potential to cascade with it, I figured I'd put it here.
  • Mind's Dilation . This card is quite the beauty, as it makes your opponents scared to cast spells in most cases. Any time your opponent casts a spell, you get to spin the wheel in their deck. Much fun to be had with this!
  • Sunbird's Invocation . Some more pseudo-cascade where you'll get to cast stuff for free so long as you cast something in the first place. With you casting big creatures, and there being plenty of them in the 99, you should be hitting something every time off this trigger.

Now that we've discussed the big spells and the fun stuff, we need to hit on how to get to the point where we can do that. Time to talk about ramp.

There are quite a few pieces of ramp in the deck, and honestly, too much for me to talk about each one. So, in the spirit of laziness, I've broken down and sorted the different categories below, just for you. You can thank me later.

So now that we've gotten that taken care of, it's time to talk about the key pieces that can be argued is the best way to ensure victory with this deck. Let's move on to...

Now, let me tell ya straight, you absolutely don't have to have these cards on the battlefield to win. They definitely help, and that's is one hundred percent true, but you can get there without them. The cards I'm talking about are as follows:
  • Pathbreaker Ibex . I talked earlier about turning dudes sideways, and there's no better feeling than doing so with this beastie out. He gives a Hoof-Daddy like effect to all of your creatures, meaning everything just got that much more deadly. Time to beat face and probably get there with commander damage.
  • Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma . This bear pumps the crew and gives to trample to just about every creature in the deck. Turn the dudes loose!
  • Shaman of Forgotten Ways . As stated in my man's name, sometimes people forget about him. When they do, it very likely can mean their death. Turning everyone's life total into very minuscule amounts can be dangerous, but it can also be very beneficial. Use this with caution, but know that it can and will win you games!
  • Strionic Resonator . This doohickey can copy your cascade triggers, your Etali triggers, literally any triggered ability you can think of. Go nuts with it.
  • Crystal Shard . I saved y'all the best for last. This stupid looking thing is amazing. Target The Wanderer with its ability, don't pay the , get him back into your hand, and recast him, getting two more cascade triggers. Or, save your commander from that pesky tax by bringing him back into your hand in response to a wrath effect. The potential of this card is amazing and can and will win you the game.

Alright, that's the deck. I hope you enjoyed it, and if you did, please feel free to leave a like! I'd love to hear about what you'd add/take away from the deck, and would also love to see your Wanderer decks myself for some inspiration.
