Budget, discard-focused modern deck. Probably not going to be tournament-competitive, but I'd like to build it for more casual settings and see how it works, Waste Not looks too fun not to take for a ride.
This is not an 8-Rack deck, but instead takes an alternate approach through Liliana's Caress paired with some harsh discard. Card advantage (and to a certain degree board presence), is maintained through Waste Not.
Win Conditions:
Obviously, discard + Liliana's Caress puts the opponent on a pretty quick clock. With a single Liliana's Caress on the field
Burning Inquiry
hits for 6 (that's 2x Lightning Bolt!) and Blightning hits for 7.
Master of the Feast may seem counter-intuitive for a discard deck, but because your opponent draws during YOUR upkeep, you are actually giving yourself targets to hit with discard during the mid-late game. By effectively utilizing and "neutralizing" his drawback, he is a 5/5 flyer for 3. Can't beat that.
Sideboard:
Extirpate is a great answer to combo decks, ruins Urzatron if you can get one of those cards into the graveyard, which isn't unreasonable considering this is a discard deck. I like this better than Surgical Extraction because the split second mechanic means it most likely won't be countered.
Bojuka Bog is obviously there to disrupt graveyard decks such as dredge and self-mill. This would take the place of swamps and perhaps a Dakmor Salvage, the only trade off being a slight slow-down for the deck. I chose this over Tormod's Crypt because as a land it can't be countered and once it has emptied a graveyard it remains beneficial as a mana source.
Additional copies of
Geth's Verdict
and Smallpox are a natural fit with this deck, and gets sided in against decks with protection/indestructible/hexproof/shroud. Forcing an opponent to sac a creature gets around all of these mechanics plus regeneration. Small Pox gives additional discard and land disruption/destruction while
Geth's Verdict
's instant speed helps against threats that don't give you a turn to respond, such as Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. There is enough other instant-speed removal in the main board that I should be able to weed out any weaker stuff then drop the Verdict.
Rakdos Charm is flexible in that it can be artifact removal, punishes aggro and weenie decks, and is also instant speed graveyard hate (looking at you, Snapcaster Mage). It doesn't directly contribute to the synergy of the deck, but it is a great option to side-in based on my opponent's deck.
Dark Deal is brutal against decks that draw tons of cards, as well as strategies that give the opposing player hexproof (Leyline of Sanctity). In this sense, this is two additional copies of
Burning Inquiry
because the opponent is not targeted, either by the sorcery or Liliana's Caress. These go in for either Wrench Mind or Duress, unless the opponent plays very few creatures, in which case you can take out some removal.
I'd be happy to hear any suggestions, this is my first discard deck.
