Maybeboard

A budget (~$100) turn-sideways deck that takes advantage of Thantis, the Warweaver's signature ability. This deck is filled with creatures that can generate advantage off of attacking into your (presumably) defenseless opponents after they've been forced to swing out with all of their creatures. I've come to really appreciate playing commanders that totally warp the normal flow of Magic as a game, rather than just providing raw advantage, and I feel like Thantis is a great example of a card that does just that.

Cards like Etali, Primal Storm and Wasitora, Nekoru Queen make up the bulk of our creatures, and are incredibly powerful when blockers are a rare occurrence, while effects like Rite of the Raging Storm and Jolene, the Plunder Queen will help keep your opponents at each other's throats instead of yours. We also have several sources of goad effects, which are some of my favorite cards in this deck as they double as both threats and pseudo-removal.

All critiques and suggestions are appreciated! At this budget level, this is obviously more of a fun deck than a competitive one, so I'm willing to sacrifice some efficiency for some fun and goofiness.

  • Grim Flayer - A good way to start filtering our draws early, and grows to a 4/4 trampler later.
  • Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons - an early way to provide you some deathtouch blockers and ping down your opponents utility creatures.
  • Atalan Jackal - a hasty trampler that Rampant Growths on every hit. An incredible value for only 3 mana.
  • Glissa Sunslayer - A deathtoucher that can draw us cards, remove an enchantment, or start pinging down anything with counters, be it planeswalkers, battles, etc.
  • Komainu Battle Armor - a 2/2 with menace that can reconfigure to one of our more effective creatures later. Even on its own, goading every creature a hit opponent has to keep them from attacking you is huge value.
  • Ohran Viper - A deathtoucher that draws us a card on hit. Simple and effective.
  • Spawnwrithe - its exponential duplicating allows it to take over a game if not stopped quickly.
  • Weathered Sentinels - a stalwart defender with vigilance and reach that will keep your opponents from wanting to mess with you until the late game, and when they do, they'll get punched in the face by a 5/8.
  • Delina, Wild Mage - a powerful triggered ability that will duplicate most of our combat damage triggers.
  • Dragonborn Champion - will draw us cards for all of our creatures with 5+ power hitting, including Thantis.
  • Jolene, the Plunder Queen - Make some treasures, and make your opponents want to hit each other to make some treasures too.
  • Primeval Herald - a trampler that Rampant Growths on ETB AND attack. A great ramp option into our commander.
  • Storrev, Devkarin Lich - will help us recur creatures when it hits.
  • Sunder Shaman - will destroy our opponent's non-creature permanents when it hits.
  • Vengeful Ancestor - will goad opponents creatures.
  • Ziatora's Envoy - Drawing us a card is the worst thing this 5/4 trampler can do for us on hit. Enough said.
  • Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper - can gain us an absurd amount of life.
  • Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant - goads our opponents, draws us cards, and incentivizes our opponents to attack each other.
  • Karlach, Fury of Avernus - Give us multiple combat steps per turn, and protects your attacking creatures with first strike.
  • Port Razer - can give us multiple combat steps per turn on hit.
  • Spring-Leaf Avenger - a 6/5 with ninjutsu that will return cards from our graveyard whenever it hits.
  • Wasitora, Nekoru Queen - will force our opponents to sac their creatures or just make us more.
  • Etali, Primal Storm - an attack trigger that will quickly take over a game if not stopped.
  • Necropolis Regent - will quickly make any creatures we have on the board enormous.
  • Rakshasa Debaser - can start filling our board with all of our opponents best dead creatures.
  • Bladewing, Deathless Tyrant - A 6/6 hasty flier that brings us a host of 2/2 tokens with menace on each hit. The tokens can act as blockers when we swing out, and just add to our offensive power in subsequent turns. After a lengthy game we can be summoning an absurd number of tokens per hit.
  • Spider Umbra - Protecting a creature with totem armor for is a great value alone. The +1/+1 and Reach is just a nice bonus.
  • Quest for Renewal - Untapping all of our creatures on our opponents turn will often mean we're the only player with a significant number of blockers.
  • Family's Favor - Protects one of our creatures when we attack, and leaves us with an indestructible creature if they don't hit, or draws us a card if they do.
  • Garruk's Uprising - We like drawing cards and we like giving our creatures trample.
  • Parasitic Impetus - goads and grows a big threat and gains us life.
  • Shiny Impetus - goads and grows a big threat and makes us treasure.
  • Deathreap Ritual - draws us cards off of any creature dying (a frequent occurrence when everything is attacking).
  • Rite of the Raging Storm - gives our opponents consistent ammo to aim at each other.
  • Sandwurm Convergence - protects us from a huge host of big threats like dragons and angels, and gives us big blockers every turn to boot.
  • Sol Ring - We're playing commander.
  • Arcane Signet - We're playing commander.
  • Blade of Selves - Turning one attacking creature that does fun stuff on hit into multiple attacking creatures that do fun stuff on hit is an obvious choice for this deck.
  • Bloodthirsty Blade - grows and goads the biggest threat on the board, and can be re-equipped cheaply.
  • Swiftfoot Boots - protects one of our creatures and gives it haste.
  • Sigiled Sword of Valeron - gives one of our creatures vigilance and gives us a vigilance token to block with whenever the equipped creature attacks.
  • Tamiyo's Safekeeping - to protect our valuable creatures.
  • Tyvar's Stand to protect our valuable creatures and potentially pump them for major damage or a combat trick.
  • Golgari Charm - kills small creatures, destroys enchantments, and saves our board from a wipe.
  • Rakdos Charm - exile a graveyard, destory an artifact, or kill a go-wide player from their own board presence.
  • Return to Nature - destroy an artifact, destroy an enchantment, or exile a meaningful card from an opponent's graveyard.
  • Tear Asunder - Exiling a permanent for 4 mana is a solid removal option on its own. Hitting artifacts or enchantments for half that is even better.
  • Wrap in Vigor - save our board from a wipe.
  • Beast Within - take out an opponent's permanent.
  • Mortality Spear - take out an opponent's permanent.
  • Return of the Wildspeaker - draw a bunch of cards, or pump our board to take out an opponent.
  • Labyrinth of Skophos - protect yourself from a big threat, or save your own creature from a bad combat (while persisting any set blocks).
  • Rogue's Passage - get a key creature through a tough defense.

Updates Add

My playgroup re-sets our decks to the $100 price limit at every new Standard legal set release, so on top of new cards, it usually means saying goodbye to some old ones with inflating cost. We lost a few old friends to the financial reaper this update, but we've also gotten a lot of new toys to play with!

My focus with the recent changes were to increase card draw and creature protection, while decreasing CMC. Both goals were accomplished, bringing in new cheap creatures like Grim Flayer and Atalan Jackal to replace some of the older top-end cards, and a significant number of new protection and draw effects like Tamiyo's Safekeeping, Snake Umbra and Harmonize. These changes should help make the deck significantly more consistent, helping us find our best creatures consistently and keep them on the field longer.
