I just want to let you know, the deck is technically not standard legal, since the inventions are reprints that are only legal in their original prints and in draft! Just wanted to let you know, paradox engine is an awesome card, wish it was standard!

It isn't a reprint, and is therefore a new card from Aether Revolt. Paradox Engine and Planar Bridge are Inventions from Aether Revolt, like the gearhulks were from Kaladesh and Smoldering Marsh and its cycle were expeditions and also in BFZ. If the card is new, even if we get the Masterpiece version first, it'll be in that set. That seems to be the precedent WotC is setting Sweepea38.

If you have any questions or suggestions for the deck though I'll be happy to answer or consider them.

Decimator of Provinces would be agreat addition I'd say. It was bad before because you had to tap all your dorks to cast it, but now all of them untap.

If je made all of my guys get haste, I might consider it as Reckless Bushwhacker #5 or #6, but just as a finisher I don't really need it. Burn from Within kills on the spot and if they counter that then I've usually got 40+ haste power on the board when I combo out. All you do is save a Bushwhacker for your last creature drop

Hanweir Battlements for an additional haste source

Maybe Hedron Archive and/or Seer's Lantern for additional mana sources

Cool deck! I had to double-take when I saw Soul of the Harvest in there. I had no idea it was standard legal again. Have you considered Pia Nalaar? Her pump ability with infinite mana and making an opposing creature unable to block could be another win-con. You could easily include Scrapheap Scrounger(or if Aether Revolt has another good cheap artifact creature) as additional targets for her.

Mana, isn't really a problem from my testing so far... Any creature that costs more than one has to provide insane card advantage or contribute to the combo, the deck is not lacking for WinCons... To give you guys an idea of the final swing, its usually every creature in the deck swinging for 3 or 4 damage each... that's 120 plus, nothing short of an instant speed boardwipe or fog is stopping that.

What I am looking for help with is redundancy with the combo, and ways to fight the disruption people will bring in for game 2. Also feel free to ask why a card has been picked, I can explain it and it helps me consider the cards usefulness.

Zaueski - Made my suggestions before playtesting based upon cards I feel would combo well with Paradox Engine, after running a test, I retract the suggestions of Hedron Archive/Seer's Lantern as they are both a waste of space and "too slow". Hanweir Battlements still may be worth swapping in as a 1 or 2 of.

I don't know if there's anything else I'd change at this point, maybe Aetherflux Reservoir in sideboard for an alt-wincon once your opponent sideboards in game 2? Not sure if that's "different" enough from your game 1 objective to be effective, but gaining 50+ life in a single turn would be fun.

With all the untapping that you're generating, Key to the City could be an option for card draw.

Yeah, Hanweir Battlements may definitely be worth testing out. I don't like Aetherflux Reservoir here because as you pointed out, most everything in game 1 that they'll board in to fight against the deck can fight the Reservoir.

Key to the City is an interesting card here... I usually have one extra combo piece in hand that's dead so discarding it to draw could be useful... I'll run some more tests over the weekend with both of those cards. The land will be difficult because getting the right colors on turn 1 and 2 is crucial, but after that, the lands don't matter at all. So 1-2 may be able to slide into the deck without too much hassle.

After a couple more tests, I like a single Key to the City but Hanweir Garrison kept messing up the crucial early mana and didn't provide enough impact when it was useful.

The deck is not consistent enough, because you don't get Burn from Within enough especially if you can't get one of your card draw engines. So I would definitely recommend adding a second or third burn so that winning is more consistent.

Omg I wasn't even paying full attention, it just looks like it'd be a pretty common old card xD Well cheers, this deck looks fun!

Zaueski says... #14

pickelchu, I don't want Burn from Within until I'm going off. Did you try playtesting? It's insanely easy to draw the whole deck in a single turn. Finding Burn from Within has never been a problem. I originally had 2, but I have an army to swing with if it gets countered and I found myself needing the slot more than the backup...

If you have examples of consistent playtests where you needed a second one then I might reconsider, but as of right now 1 seems appropriate.

Maybe Expedite for more card draw and haste.

December 30, 2016 4:32 p.m.

I'd recommend finishing off the playset of Village Messenger  Flip because haste makes it an excellent potential mana dork. I also recommend Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter; as a 1/2 she's got a solid body and the ability to make one or more servos/constructs per turn could bring this deck over the top.

Zaueski says... #17

Village Messenger  Flip having haste is a huge plus yes, but Endless One (the card I'd cut) is colorless... So there's big upsides to each. Making sure you have enough of each color when the combo starts is super important for going off and Endless One helps out by helping alleviate the number of times you guess the wrong color... I'll be doing extensive playtesting over the next couple weeks over the right ratios... I think card choice is pretty spot on except for the sideboard, so now it's time to wait and see if AER gives me any more redundancy or improves any of the pieces. One drop haste guys that can draw like Bomat Courier are exactly what you want. However, just drawing like Thraben Inspector and Insolent Neonate are close seconds.

I know it is 6 cmc but Ajani Unyielding it is a search engine and a "win more" card I would add 2 in the deck either side or main and I hope we get a nice one drop from aether as well. Still not sold on Bomat Courier its a nice one drop but it can have a massive drawback.

January 1, 2017 6:09 a.m.

Zaueski says... #19

Ajani Unyielding is as you stated, a winmore card. All he'll do is dilute the combo and slow the deck down.

As for Bomat Courier... That is probably the best 1 drop creature in the deck. Haste turns into a mana dork the turn he comes down, and all he has to do to draw a card is attack. Yes, you pitch your hand, but when we're digging with him usually we're pitching extra lands anyways. And finally, he's colorless to cast! That means the world when you're looking to go off and have to guess the right color.

I like this deck, I had started one that was going to be likely blue/green using Quicksmith Spy possibly with Key to the City, Loam Dryad, Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafteretc. It was probably going to try and splash red for Thermo-Alchemist or something. Or make use of ramping into Planar Bridge to find some powerful threat but I'm not sure really if that's at all a good idea. As by that point Aetherworks Marvel probably is simply better.

But I like what you have done with this more, as I forgot all about Soul of the Harvest being standard legal and the addition of haste creatures which my version was lacking. It wasn't fully done as I haven't looked at it for a while but yours is better than what I was planning for it.

I'm sure Aether Revolt should have something useful still for this deck.

Thanks for the praise Homura_Akemi, the deck has been surprisingly fun to brew with and playtests are always a blast. At this point I'm waiting on spoiler season to see if I get any better pieces. I should be starting sleeved testing here within the week so I'll start posting some real results of matchups.

I'm hoping to make this so oppressive it gets banned, so here's hoping Aether Revolt delivers lmao.

Zaueski, have you considered going temer instead of naya?

By using blue you get access to more win conditions with Crush of Tentacles and Part the Waterveil, you gain access to more enablers with Kiora, Master of the Depths, countermagic, token makers with cards like Eldrazi Skyspawner which gives you access to even more mana, and you even get more one drops with Mausoleum Wanderer, Prophet of Distortion, and Salvage Drone.

These one drops have large utility, as the wanderer can sometimes protect your other creatures, and the drone and prophet give you access to more card draw, even if it is a bit clunky.

Not to mention that you get my favorite combination of Coralhelm Guide or Key to the City and Oran-Rief Invoker, where you just pump the invoker a bunch and punch the opponent in the face with it. However, this is probably strictly worse than Crush of Tentacles or Part the Waterveil.

Finally, by having wedge colours instead of a shard, you gain access to Wandering Fumarole, Spirebluff Canal, Botanical Sanctum, and Lumbering Falls, which provides something to do in the event that you face a control deck, and could speed up your mana with the fast lands.

I'm sure there's probably more interesting blue cards that you gain access too, but this might be an interesting path for you to follow.

Zaueski says... #25

Temur would be a lot better for a control deck that wins by comboing off... Right now I'm looking at outspeeding everyone. If you notice my sideboard is mostly blue anyways. Prophet of Distortion was highly considered but it isn't consistent card draw because I can't repeatedly create colorless mana. Bygone Bishop just ended up being the better card, for once Blue is isn't the color that can consistently draw with this deck. Also Paradoxical Outcome is strictly better than Crush of Tentacles for what I want to do.
