Sisay's Superfriends

Standard Brawl*

MULRAH

This budget "Brawl" deck is an attempt to put the most affordable planeswalkers to work in a fun, thematic deck.

I tested this deck out to make sure it functions reasonably well. All the games were 1v1 "Brawl" games (25 life).

  1. This game started out very slowly, doing hardly anything until T7, at which point it went from zero to sixty almost immediately. Then all of a sudden it was getting planeswalkers into play and had two ways to proliferate each turn. It was able to win on T10. It's pretty dangerous to be so slow, but there was a counterspell and edict effect in hand for most of the game, both of which could have been used to hold off an opponent's aggressive start.
  2. The pace of this game was similar, with the deck seeming to do hardly anything until T6 or T7 and then coming out of nowhere to win on T9. Again, some interaction in hand hopefully signals the deck has a chance to last through several turns of doing nothing. For the second time in a row, Niv-Mizzet did not enter the battlefield. Last time it was because it seemed unnecessary; this time, I never got the right mix of mana to do it.
  3. The game took off a turn earlier but still was doing very little for the first few turns. Niv-Mizzet still couldn't be cast, but it did not seem to matter. The game was done on T8.

Despite the consistently slow starts and the absence of Niv-Mizzet, I appreciated how each game finished in a somewhat different way. The planeswalkers have powerful effects that interact in different ways. Game #1 was about going off with proliferate. Game #2 was about swarming the board and winning with an Oath of Ajani. Game #3 got a big army token down for a significant chunk of damage.

A more expensive mana base would address the deck's primary weaknesses. The cheap tweak would be to swap Niv-Mizzet for Sisay, who can hit the board and at least be a 2/2 that grows over the course of the game. That change would make me want to shift this more toward a "good guys" theme and away from the "War of the Spark" theme, which seems pretty doable.
