Captain Sisay

Gameplan

The deck works like a toolbox deck, in which you power out Captain Sisay as soon as you can and tutor up threats and answers depending on the board state, until to get to a critical mass enough to take over the game.

There are many ways to win the game with this deck and also many ways to lock out your opponents. With the banning of Paradox engine there are still many ways to win. One of my favorite ways and one of the more indepth ways to win is:

  1. Fetch Gaea's Cradle (usually best to wait until opponents end step)
  2. Play Gaea’s Cradle
  3. Fetch Nissa, Genesis Mage
  4. Play Nissa, Genesis Mage and untap Captain Sisay+Gaea’s Cradle+ Mana Dork + Land
  5. Fetch the The Chain Veil
  6. Play and activate the Chain Veil
  7. Nissa untap Captain Sisay+Gaea’s Cradle+ Mana Dork + Land
  8. Fetch Gideon, Martial Paragon
  9. Play Gideon, Martial Paragon and untapping all creatures
  10. Fetch Karn, the Great Creator
  11. Play Karn, the Great Creator and targeting the Chain Veil
  12. Gideon, Martial Paragon untapping all creatures (inc. the Chain Veil)
  13. Fetch Surrak, the Hunt Caller or card:Akroma's Memeorial
  14. Activate the hasted the Chain Veil (during combat if using Surrak)
  15. Fetch Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and burning down opponents with infinite activations of Nissa / Gideon / Ugin / Chain Veil

The amount of mana this combo requires depends precisely on how many creatures, artifacts, lands, and other abilities that promote your combo (like card:Ashaya making all of your creatures into lands which can be untapped with Gideon, Martial Paragon's ability.

  1. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite Wipe Opponents Lands
  2. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa and Linvala, Keeper of Silence Lock opponents out from tapping lands
  3. Either Selvala, Heart of the Wilds or Selvala, Explorer Returned with Umbral Mantle to generate infinite or obscene amounts of mana and card draw with infinite Sisay activations

The deck can also outright just kill with combat damage in many ways.

  1. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa
  2. Brisela, Voice of Nightmares
  3. Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
  4. Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and many others can just run over your opponents if they are not prepared to deal with it.

The more you play the more ways to win you find

Resources

This is not a dedicated Stax deck but it does have Stax pieces that help slow our opponents down throughout the game. 99% of the time this deck wins on our turn, so disruption during our turn can cripple us and put us out behind very early

Linvala, Keeper of Silence & Yasharn, Implacable Earth prevent our opponents from activating their abilities of creatures, fetchlands, any sacrificing effects and life paying effects. Note Yasharn is symmetrical and affects us as well, turning off our fetches and Birthing Pod and opposing Linvalas and Cursed Totem type effects destory the very core of this deck.

Kataki, War's Wage and Thalia, Heretic Cathar tax our opponents artifacts and causes their creatures and non basic lands to come into play tapped. Especially devestating for our opponents fetchlands, forcing them to have two turns of tapped lands or forcing them to search for basics, screwing up their mana base.

Hokori, Dust Drinker is the most blatantly powerful stax piece, in which I only ever play if you are feeling extra cruel. I usually don't play it because it sucks the fun away too much sometimes by not allowing to allow your opponents to play the game and you just goldfishing until you win. Even more so you can pod it into play, fetch it at the end of turn, play it in cojunction with seedborn, etc etc. If you are into that type of stuff, then he's great.

The deck itself is very "Sorcery Speed" based, so there are ways our opponents can stop our plan if we don't have adequate protection.

  1. Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant   immediately flips when entering the battlefield, preventing ALL damage to our creatures, comes out very early.
  2. Selfless Spirit and Avacyn, Angel of Hope give our creatures indestructible for board wipes
  3. Kogla, the Titan Ape Protects Sisay and himself
  4. Urza's Ruinous Blast a psuedo one sided boardwipe that hits only our non-legendary permanents
  5. Teferi's Protection Phases all of our permanents out and gives us full protection
    1. As we already know, our deck is not 100% legendary. and some of our non-legendary cards are still quite powerful. Worldly Tutor & Enlightened Tutor can get any creature, artifact or enchantment we want. One of the best is Survival of the Fittest Which allows us to pitch any creature to get any creature. which shores up the weakness for non-legendarycreature cards. Its not perfect by any means, but does allow us access to what we need as the game progresses. This along side Birthing Pod allows us to tutor up the perfect answers and put them directly onto the battlefield.
