Harness the Storm looked like an awesome card, so I wanted to make a deck around it. I tried it as a RDW type thing with 4 of all the good buff spells (Titan's Strength, for example) and that failed miserably as it didn't want to pay 3 for an enchantment that does nothing immediately. This deck, however, is much much slower and doesn't have much else to do with 3 mana.
The land destruction cards are pretty much all that's in standard -
Volcanic Upheaval
is fantastic, as being instant speed lets us hold up mana in case they play a land and if not then
Natural Connection
instead.
Demolish
is the worst, but this deck needs a critical mass of land destroy cards. Crumble to Dust is split 2/2 across MB and SB, as although it is incredibly powerful for thinning out their deck and hitting their colour fixing, it can only hit nonbasics.
Reclaiming Vines
is nice for having the option to hit enchantments, but is mostly there to get more spells.
Structural Distortion
is just land exile with a shock and is pretty good.
Hedron Crawler and Deathcap Cultivator allow a T3 land destruction spell, whilst
Natural Connection
allows for a T4 land destruction whilst keeping
Fiery Impulse
open to deal with aggro.
Fiery Impulse
is mostly there to beat aggro, as this deck really struggles to get a creature off the board if it hits until it eventually gets to Dragonlord Atarka or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger. I only put one of each in the deck as this deck can go a really long way, I've tested it against a few decks on here and it's come down to milling (before I added those two - it should work better now!).
Possible additions are Oblivion Sower, as this ramps me and gets any lands off of
Structural Distortion
or Crumble to Dust, but it doesn't actually deny them any land so I'm not sure about it. Mirrorpool could copy a land destruction spell, but then I'd have to add more colourless sources and I don't really want to be mana screwed in this sort of deck. Kozilek's Return will eventually replace
Seismic Rupture
in the sideboard.
Sideboard options are mostly to beat aggro - Radiant Flames and
Seismic Rupture
allow a lot of board wipes,
Jaddi Offshoot
is probably needing to go, but it lets me block small attackers and gain life, both beat aggro nicely, 1
Fiery Impulse
allows me to make 4x in my deck, helping Harness the Storm.
A note for if anyone tries to use this deck - If you have in your hand say a
Demolish
and a
Volcanic Upheaval
with the latter also in your grave, cast
Demolish
even though logically you should keep it in case they play a threatening artifact, as then if you later get Harness the Storm out, you may be able to double cast
Volcanic Upheaval
, provided you have 8 mana. This helps turn your late game land destruction into 2-for-1's, which is always nice.
