Sideboard

Gearing up for my first GP, but I'm too Johnny to bring anything but my own build. Thing is, I love this deck. It's got a nice mix of threats and disruption like Jund, breaks mana like a mini-Eldrazi, and in a long game can dig like crazy for an infinite combo, like Twin used to do. It's not as good at any one of these things than those decks, obviously, but I think it has potential.

The central card is Heartless Summoning, which makes the whole world go 'round. With Heartless, Myr Superion becomes a free 4/5, which matches up nicely against a turn-2 Tarmogoyf. It also lets Priest of Urabrask accelerate into a turn-3 Wurmcoil Engine, and lets me evoke Mulldrifter and Shriekmaw for 1 mana eachor hard cast them for 3.

Meanwhile, Havengul Lich lets me recur all my evoke creatures, as well as Avalanche Riders, for endless value.

There's also an infinite combo tucked in there: Havengul Lich + Heartless Summoning + Perilous Myr + Priest of Urabrask lets me infinitely recast Priest for infinite mana, and shock my opponent to death with infinite Myr death triggers. Since it's a 4-card combo, and vulnerable to graveyard hate, I don't push it very hard (only 2 maindeck Perilous Myrs and 3 Priests), but if a game stalls out, I can dig hard with Mulldrifter and Faithless Looting to find the last pieces. Still, it's generally plan-B to bashing face with Superions and Wurmcoils.

A few more synergy odds and ends:

  • Priest of Urabrask lets me cast Myr Superions without the Heartless Summoning, helping ensure that the big guys are never dead cards in my hand.
  • In a hand that's got nothing else going on, Priest of Urabrask also helps me flashback Faithless Looting.
  • Fun combat trick: Echoing Truth onto my own Heartless Summoning is a pseudo-anthem nobody ever sees coming.
  • If you read Havengul Lich's text carefully, you'll see it lets me cast creatures in any graveyard, not just my own. It's almost never relevant, but Snapcaster Mage and Arcbound Ravager are pretty fun targets.

Well, GPLA has come and gone, and I've learned a lot about this deck.

On a work trip the week before, I played some Modern at a new store with a new meta and got stomped. I beat 5-color Bring to Light, then lost to Esper Reanimator, Breach Scapeshift, and RG Tron.

I realized I'd only prepared for aggro strategies like Infect and Affinity, and big mana strategies were hosing me. That's when I went off the rails a bit.

I added Lightning Bolt to the sideboard in fear of Nahiri, the Harbinger, despite having previously told myself that this deck didn't need it with all the Kolaghan's Commands and Perilous Myrs flying around. I also didn't get my hands on any Thoughtseizes in time for the GP, which might have helped.

Like I said, I went 2-7, beating BG Infect and U Tron and losing to Affinity, Abzan Company, Bogles, Kiki-Chord, Blue Moons, GW Tron, and BUG Infect. Several of my losses were extremely close, which only gives me more confidence to keep brewing.

One of my new additions, Olivia Voldaren, won me game 3 against U Tron when I topdecked a Havengul Lich with Heartless Summoning on the field, Priest of Urabrask in my hand, and Wurmcoil Engine and Olivia in my graveyard, using the infinite mana loop to reanimate Olivia and Wurmcoil, then repeatedly burn Wurmcoil to death and recast it for infinite counters and tokens.

I already have more ideas for this build, plus designs on a Sultai build and an Abzan Eldrazi deck that also uses Heartless. Thanks everyone for your input and comments!
