This deck is one of my favorites. I've been tinkering around with it since its inception way back in Onslaught. The basic idea is to create lots of Beast tokens while there's an
AEther Charge
on the board, thus killing all your opponents. And since you now have this large herd of Beasts grazing on your side of the battlefield, you're relatively safe from the crackback. I also have
Master Warcraft
as a surprise, allowing my herd to saunter over for the win.
Beasts were one of the secondary tribes in Onslaught block, but they got some very special tools. When I saw
AEther Charge
, I knew it was love. Beasts also got
Ravenous Baloth
, which allows you to slaughter members of your herd for sustenance.
Wirewood Savage
keeps the deck running, drawing you into more beasts and more lands to cast those beasts. And then there's the incomparable
Contested Cliffs
, which is repeatable removal that is incredibly hard to deal with, and that is a truly beautiful thing. And finally, Hunting Pack is not just that bad Storm spell that has been forgotten. It's a late-game surprise that just destroys all opponents with a Charge on the field, and leaves plenty of attackers to take out anyone left over.
Over the years, Magic has taken to periodically producing cards that create Beast tokens, which lets me keep tinkering. But the best thing to happen to the Beast deck in a long time is the character of Garruk. His initial incarnation, Garruk Wildspeaker, works perfectly in this particular deck. His first ability untaps your
Contested Cliffs
and Gruul Turf, letting your beasts fight two opposing creatures in a single turn. His second ability, well, makes more beasts. And his Limit Break unleashes your massive herd of grazing beasts in a mighty stampede. He brought along his buddy Garruk's Packleader to help out as well, since Beast tokens tend to be either 3/3 or 4/4.
