This section is where I store my arguments for some cards to be used in the SB. I swap them depending on the current meta I am facing.
-
2x Blessed Alliance: Great card to bring in against burn, eldrazi tron, aggresive decks, infect, bogles. Escalating, just as with Collective Brutality, gives the versatility that this decks aims for. The fact that we can play this at instant speed gives it the edge over other options, IMO.
-
1x Aven Mindcensor: Nice 1-of that helps us against combo decks and puts up a clock as well. It also improves tron, valakut, and amulet match-ups, which are pretty bad, so always welcome. Flash is huge and tilts mane opponents, as they really dont expect much EOT interaction from our side.
-
1x Pithing Needle: Extremely versatile piece of sidetech. Mainly against problematic planeswalkers like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon or Jace, Architect of Thought. Also useful against the Ad Nauseam deck to hose Lightning Storm as well as any of their artifacts. Endbringer or Eldrazi Displacer.
-
1 Sorin, Lord of Innistrad in replacement of the 3rd Sorin, Solemn Visitor. The former is clearly worse in this deck, but since the PW rule changed, having them both on the battlefield seems too powerful to pass. At the moment, trying him as a 1-of. Setting an anthem without dying and ticking up to create lifelinkers is great. Less stable than Gideon, less powerful than the good Sorin, but somewhere in the middle. As I said already many times, the name of this deck is "versatility".
-
1 Cast Out: it offers versatility and maindeck answer to anything pesky our opponent is doing (looking at you Ensnaring Bridge). Being able to cycle it for as little as 1 mana is huge.
-
2x Auriok Champion: Very well-positioned in the current meta, the champion is great against aggro and black/red based decks. She conflicts a bit with the mana we intend to have for Liliana of the Veil, but is relatively easy to work around that problem. If we get to stick her early in the game against any kind of aggro strategy, we are heavily favoured.
-
1x Basilisk Collar: Recursive threat that works wonders against big creatures and resilient creature decks. Complements greatly out Bitterblossom lifeloss and lets us transform our chump blocks into lethal threats. Not excellent in synergy with Stony Silence, but the benefits are greater than the disadvantages (just like Lingering Souls and Rest in Peace).
-
2x Nihil Spellbomb: Anything using the GY will suffer with this. I am trying it now over Rest in Peace because of the card advantage, since my meta is not so GY focused but grindier decks are present. It doesn't hose our own Lingering Souls or Start / Finish. Some people advocate that 3 pieces of GY hate are the way to go, and I agree with that, so we also include...
-
3x Damping Sphere: This card got me real hyped when it was first spoiled. Good against Tron, Storm, KCI, Amulet Titan, Living end and Bloodbraid Elf shenanigans, Eldrazi, Hollow One and any other deck trying to go off very hard on a single turn. Not that we should bring it in in all these matchups, but hey, the cards replaced [c]Stony Silence[/c] for me (after a very thorough trade-off) so it must be good.
-
2x Stony Silence: I used to say that this card should be a 3-of or a none-of because we really wat to nail it t2. Great against affinity, eldrazi tron, normal tron (mainly on the play), ad nauseam, tezzeretor, lantern control... My mind hasn't changed, only, we got this:
-
2x Damping Sphere: This card got me real hyped when it was first spoiled. Ruins Tron, Storm, Living end and Bloodbraid Elf shenanigans, Eldrazi, Hollow One and any other deck trying to go off very hard on a single turn. With this, we can afford to run only 2 Stony Silences in my opinion.
-
2x Runed Halo: This card is dangerous to have because there are many MU's where one could think, yeah, I could bring it in. However, it takes knowledge and good thinking to apply it correctly. It basicly gives us air against combo decks and valakut variants. Also great in the Etron MU stopping their Reality Smashers and their Thought-Knot Seers (we don't draw a card either). I use to bring it in also against burn for eidolon, and can act as a trick against creature decks featuring many 4-ofs like Zoo.
