I'm sitting here Racking my brain trying to figure out what is missing and I really can't think of anything. The only thing I came up with is maybe running Dark Confidant your mana curve is pretty low. Also, Bitterblossom could be helpful. Altar's Reap may be a little better than Sign in Blood. mainly because Altar's Reap is instant speed and if you have Monastery Mentor out he replaces the token you sac any way.

Great Deck +1 Kudos and all that Jazz. Let us know how you do in tournament.

I've actually been considering swapping Bob in for Sign in Blood. I'm taking the deck to an event tomorrow, and I think that's what I will run. I'll update accordingly.

Hide/Seek I believe can be some great tech to be had for the deck. I don't think it would be a great main deck card but maybe a home in the sideboard. The Hide part can do some decent work against Affinity or Tron's Wurmcoils, that can be stubborn at times. But The Seek part would be a decent follow up to a turn 1 Thoughtseize, you can pick away at control and combo decks win cons. It also could feed you some knowledge about what your opponents are running and where to go with your game plan.

Alright, so I took this bad boy to an event last night and went 1-2. The last round I got horribly mana screwed both games, so that's kind of a wash. But based on the first 2 rounds, I really like the deck, although there are definite areas of improvement.

I actually really like Hide/Seek, and I think I'll swap that in for Extirpate in the SB.

I think I need a little more spot removal. I'm considering both Murderous Cut and Dismember. Boros Charm was fairly mediocre, and so was Crackling Doom, so right now they're on the chopping block.

Any thoughts and opinions on what changes to make and how to tweak the numbers would be greatly appreciated!

Actually now that I think about it you might try Bonfire of the Damned you seem midrange enough to get it off for a decent amount. Also Terminate is really good removal for your deck. I would move crackling doom to the side and drop some of your redundant sideboard cards. Rakdos Charm does the work for Rest in Piece. Also having Rakdos Charm, Stony Silence, Vandalblast and Wear / Tear seems like a lot of cards doing the same thing to me.

Why no Young Pyromancer? It might as well be Monastery Mentor 5-8 for you.

Drago_Lion: I actually really like Terminate and had forgotten about that as an option. I think I'll use it for now as my extra removal. I'm not sure about Bonfire. It just requires a lot of mana to be that powerful. Possibly as a one-of. As far as the sideboard, I've actually dropped Vandalblast and 1 Rakdos Charm already. But they do each serve their own purpose. Charm hits Twin, Stony Silence hits affinity super hard, Rest in Peace is great against Vengevine and also Storm. And finally, Wear / Tear gets rid of problem enchantments like Blood Moon, Pyromancer's Ascension, etc. So I'm a little hesitant at this point to cut too much else from the SB.

zerowner: The answer really comes down to space more than anything. What would I cut for YP? Mentor is stronger as a token generator, and I'd rather focus the rest of the deck on cards that trigger him, rather than more duplicates.

Have you thought about maybe running Mortify? It can get rid of trouble enchantments too and can be mained as removal. Also, I totally get why Rakdos Charm is there I was just saying it does the job of like half of your sideboard by itself.

I have to say though the addition of Hide/Seek, pure stroke of genius. Also, Why not run Surgical Extraction over Slaughter Games?

Do you think you have solid enough creatures to warrant the inclusion of swords? I like Sword of Body and Mind and Sword of Fire and Ice.

April 2, 2015 7:20 p.m.

kmcree says... #11

Hmmm, Mortify is an interesting option, I'm just not totally sold on 3 mana for a removal spell. While Rakdos Charm is fantastic in some situations, its relatively weak as graveyard hate since it can only be used once, and against Affinity its really just another Terminate. RIP completely annihilates the graveyard, and Stony Silence shuts down Affinity more completely. So that's why those 2 are there.

I also really like Hide/Seek. Another card I had totally forgotten about, and am very happy to have been reminded of.

The problem with Surgical Extraction is that the target has to be in the graveyard. So its not quite as strong against combo decks, which is primarily what SG is in for. It can name Scapeshift, Grapeshot, etc. and completely shut out those decks, whereas for Surgical Extraction I have to have already forced a discard for it to be relevant. If I was going to move away from SG, I would probably go for Extirpate to be honest, because not being able to be countered or responded to is usually more useful than the Phyrexian mana.

kameenook: Sword of Fire and Ice is a possibility, but not as more than a 1-of. Sword of Body and Mind is pretty underwhelming. I had actually considered Batterskull, and even Ajani Vengeant. But the problem, again, is what would I take out? I'm not sure that any of those options are better fits than what I currently have.

kameenook says... #13

Sword of Body and Mind gives you the Jace, Memory Adept clock, although it might be bad with lots of Lingering Souls running around. (Unless you milled yourself and won with damage, interesting).

Rather than Ajani Vengeant, I would consider Ajani Steadfast. I think Sorin, Solemn Visitor would be optimal, but if you only have one creature (which I'm certain you will often have more), Ajani Steadfast is better. I'd probably take out a Lightning Helix.

Unearth. BLACK HEARTS NOW REIGN!

zerowner says... #15

The thing is that Monastery Mentor is likely to die as soon as it comes out against any kind of viable modern deck. Young Pyromancer allows you to have your mentors die, and then you actually have a back up. OR, Young Pyromancer will take a their removal to the face, and then they won't have things to use against Monastery Mentor.

April 2, 2015 8:58 p.m.

kmcree says... #16

@kameenook: The thing with both Ajani Steadfast and Sorin, Solemn Visitor is that they don't really protect themselves, and they require a board presence to be effective. Ajani Vengeant can protect himself and doesn't need a creature on the board to be a threat.

@zerowner: While its true that Mentor is vulnerable to removal, keep in mind that this deck has lots of hand disruption that can mitigate that risk to some extent. And additionally, the deck has enough of its own removal and burn to drag the game out and win grindy matchups. Again, its not that YP is bad, its more that I don't have the room.

Have you thought about maybe playing Thundermaw Hellkite over Butcher of the Horde

April 2, 2015 10:13 p.m.

kmcree says... #18

Honestly not really. Thundermaw costs more, so he hurts me with Bob. And his ETB effect only really helps against tokens, which aren't that prevalent.

Hey man, I like this build you're running with. I have one that's pretty close to this one, if you wouldn't mind I'd love if you were to drop by and leave a comment or something :)
The ascendance of Mardu!.
Btw, +1!

Apocate says... #21

My only suggestion is replace something with a set of two or three Impact Tremors. The deck is missing nothing, but some Impact would probably only hurt your game by turning into your finisher and not letting you utilize everything else you have at your disposal.

April 22, 2015 8:33 p.m.

+1 just for the deck name. Awesome.

Thought about Young Pyromancer? With all the instants and sorceries you'll be playing, the 1/1s will be rolling in.
