If you feel the need for speed, Gravecrawler would be a solid add, with all the zombies you're running.

I still think "Devotion to Obliteration" or "Devotion to Annihilation" are cooler titles. I like the idea of curving an obliterator into a Gary. I'm not sure if that's competitively viable, but it sounds like fun.

Why not just swap in Vampire Nighthawk? You can swap out the Vampiric Links from both the main and sideboard and have a full playset at your disposal. Its a little high on the curve, but with an enchant creature on your pre-Obliterator creatures you're probably not going to get more than one or two uses out of a single Link. Why not bump up your devotion while giving yourself a good blocker as well? It seems like better card advantage too.

I actually like Vampiric Link as a pseudo removal spell for 1 mana that boosts devotion. Very nice list. I considered a mono black list on the bigger end of midrange with a devotion finish myself as well, only I splashed white to gain access to Path to Exile and better sideboard hate cards. I also toyed with the idea of using Stillmoon Cavalier as a trump card to all the midrange decks that have no way to kill it while still adding a good amount of devotion. I think Liliana and Obliterator are reason enough to play this strategy alone.

Wait a second... You can enchant an opponent's creature with the link and benefit can't you? That makes a lot more sense now.

Yes. So ideally I enchant a threat that is say a 3/3 and now their attacks do nothing, so they may instead block with them but if they block a Bloodghast then they heal me for 3, helpful in stalling the game for me to find threats or win.

blocking a Bloodghast it just comes back, Geralf's Messenger undying and enter trigger for more damage, blocking Phyrexian Obliterator bad idea anyway, so Vampiric Link is effectively a removal

also even better against burn putting Vampiric Link on Eidolon of the Great Revel makes any bolt type effect do 2 to the burn player, while doing 3 to me but also healing me for 2

Vampiric Link on Eidolon, I like that.

Vampiric Link is still very meh in the md, seeing as it doesn't really do anything in so many situations. It's a fine sideboard card but including it in the main will result in awkward draws and unnecessary losses. If you feel like a matchup is bad, just run the hate cards in the sideboard.

Looting in a midrange-ish deck is quite bad. It's cute with Bloodghast but Magic games generally don't play out that way. I'd be more inclined to agree with the inclusion if it did something else in the deck but it really doesn't.

Five discard spells just won't cut it, seeing as your clock is quite slow and you don't really have ways to interact with your opponent other than removal. I'd play at least six, probably even more.

3x Nykthos seems like overkill and just pretty bad in general. 23 lands seems like 1-2 too few - you're planning on casting 4/5drops on curve. 24 lands is pretty much the minimum.

Surgical Extraction is terrible unless you're afraid of exactly GriShoalBrand. Play Relic of Progenitus if you want to hate your opponent's GY and more copies of Slaughter Games if you want to take out critical combo pieces.

2x Kolaghan's Command in the SB seems weird. It's really a maindeck card and you're always short on sideboard slots anyway if you're going to play a fair deck in Modern. Slaughter Pact is also definitely a maindeck card.

You think Erebos, God of the Dead is worth a sideboard?

Going to try a budget version of this.

Akuta, Born of Ash is a good one to get some free devotion or something to chump block

Any thoughts on Crack the Earth? Reminds me of Innocent Blood.

Nice deck, +1 from me

Innocent Blood is a 1-mana Edict if you don't have any creatures out or only have creatures that you can recur somehow. Crack the Earth is most often a 2-for-1 for your opponent since you're going to have a permanent to sacrifice. The card's terrible without Bloodghast and merely kinda ok with it.

Zer0w says... #16

It is only good if you have something you want to sacrifice, like Hatching Plans. or if you've temporarily stolen something with a card like Take. Or in a land hate deck in which your opening hand has a Simian Spirit Guide and aCrack the Earth and you go second.

Do you have any results from playtests or details on notable matchups?

March 6, 2016 1:36 p.m.

That is true Zer0w. Nioxic have you thought about upgrading Vampiric Link to something like Basilisk Collar? The collar doesn't go away when the creature gets removed but it does have a equip cost.

March 6, 2016 8:05 p.m.

Vampiric link isn't actually lifelink. It affects non-combat damage dealt by creatures like Eidolon of the Great Revel.

March 7, 2016 7:07 a.m.

This is a really cool deck. Bloodsoaked Champion is good if you are interested in revival. Also, you may as well have some sacrificing stuff. Also, Bump in the Night is fast and cheap.

hunkers says... #21

Bump in the night is amazing. If you think about it,Bump in the Night is a black lightning bolt with no removal potential but it has late game flashback!

March 11, 2016 1:40 p.m.

It's not a bolt. Bolt is good because it hits creatures and planeswalkers.

You have too many conflicting synergies in this deck. Faithless Looting just doesn't work well because the only card that works in the grave is Bloodghast and you'll be losing hand advantage. Night's Whisper will get you further and you have Liliana of the Veil to scrap Bloodghast. Geralf's Messenger is too slow for modern in most cases and given your low creature base and lack of blockers you should replace him for Garza's Assassin or Royal Assassin. If you're running red you should have Dreadbore in the sideboard if not mainboard to deal with planeswalkers. I'd also scrap Kolaghan's Command for Dismember or more Terminate

polluted delta is stupid in this deck. if youre gonna have obliterator, you should put in mortician beetle

APPLE01DOJ says... #25

Jsmith94 no it's not. It works wonder with Bloodghast and can grab both a Swamp and Blood Crypt.
