Upgrades in terms of priority:

Mind Over Matter -> Patron Wizard -> Mystical Tutor -> Vedalken AEthermage -> Others. Course the first two aren't exactly budget friendly.

Zuran Spellcaster seems like it'd do well on its own if your meta has a lot of weenies, plus it infinites with Isochron Scepter/Elite Arcanist + Dramatic Reversal + Sol Ring

Possible combos:

Caltrops + Serendib Sorcerer = kill any unbuffed creature attacking you

Stasis + Surgespanner = only you untap

Considering Simic Manipulator since it's sort of a cheaper Beguiler of Wills. Plus it combos with Serendib Sorcerer to steal anything. Might still be too situational though.
