FNM - Modern —July 4, 2015
So I took first at a 3 round swiss tournament at my LGS with this beast. It was quite a fun night, and I had some interesting games. I figured I would get outpowered or stomped out early but this deck went the distance.
Game 1 - A U/R land destruction deck. This deck was probably the most jank of all the decks I played against. I was on the draw. My opponent dropped a mountain and passed. I dropped a Ghost Quarter, popped his mountain, and told he may search for a basic land. He tapped it in response to cast Lightning Bolt and then proceed to search for an island. I then cast Archive Trap twice. He gave me that sour look, and then milled 26 cards. I paid two life and cast Surgical Extraction removing his Wildfires, pull the one in his hand and the 2 others in his library. We play another 2 turns before he just decided to scoop since I took all of his win cons out of the deck. Round two, I was on the draw again, after dropping a Hedron Crab he kept stealing my land with Annex, so it was slow progression. After a wildfire took out my Hedron crab. I finally managed to get two lands to stick to the board and I played Mesmeric Orb. He kept tapping out 6 lands to play Wildfire and Frost Titan, milling himself. When he'd attack, I'd just cast Darkness. Finally he succumb to two Glimpse the Unthinkables.
Game 2 - I was playing against a B/W midrange lifegain deck, this time I was on the play This was a well constructed deck, but being a newer player, he was using more recent set cards like Sorin, Solemn Visitor. I straight started the mill chain with Breaking / Entering, Glimpse the Unthinkable, and then I used a pair Surgical Extraction to remove 7 of his non-basic lands, and then hit him with a Mind Funeral which cleared his deck. The second round, he took the play, and I landed a pair of Hedron Crabs and then popped a pair of fetches hitting him for 12. Followed that up with a Ghost Quarter + double Archive Trap combo, to which he just concede the game.
Game 3 - I was up again a R/B aggro deck with some graveyard shenanigans. In game one I hit him with the Ghost Quarter + Archive Trap combo and kept the pressure up with Glimpse the Unthinkable. He scooped and we went to round 2. He sided some cards in, and I landed two Mesmeric Orbs watching him tap out repeatedly, milling himself. I was sparingly casting the 2 Darknesses I had to bide my time. With 7 cards in his library, he popped an Altar's Reap to draw some answers because I was at 10 and he had 6 damage coming across. I drew a land, and then passed. He untapped and realize that he forced himself to mill out because he had miscounted, winning me the 3rd match.
Overall, the deck performed incredibly well, and left a bittersweet taste in a lot of mouths. People thought it was cool that a mill deck did so well, but they were shocked that they lost to such a powerhouse at the same time. Overall, very happy with the list. The only thing I would consider would be a pair of Ensnaring Bridges in the sideboard.

While Mind Grind is certainly a fun card, it's not a practical card. For 3 less mana, I can get the same effect with Mind Funeral. While it is true that Mind Funeral only affects 4 lands and Mind Grind can become larger than that, I have to have the mana to pay more for a bigger effect. Sadly, I'm not often looking for a mana dump, because I'm spending mana efficiently to mill out my opponent. I appreciate the idea, and can see the novelty of it, but I don't think it's fast enough for this deck sadly. Thank you for the suggestion though.

I would clear comments, it's getting too long for me to look at the new ones.

I wanna point out that Shelldock Isle doesn't cast the spell for free, you have to have to not exile a graveyard, and get it to a certain point (even if it is relatively easy, it's more requirements). then, the effect costs a mana and a tap, so its two mana. When you take that into account, most spells cost two mana or so, so it's no where near free in this deck. Plus, it's another tap land, and that slows you down immensely. Overall, the isle is pretty much just a waste. just my opinion.

ye, only trap, funeral and incursion top the two mana spot.

True, it doesn't cast the spell for free and Shelldock Isle does enter the battlefield tapped, however, when I exile an Archive Trap, a Mind Funeral, or a Breaking / Entering, then I'm pretty happy with the results because I can very easily and very often drop my opponent's library to 20 cards or less. The ability to pick one of 4 cards gives me an excellent selection to choose from. Typically at 20 cards left in a library, an Archive Trap or Mind Funeral for one mana can finish the game. I've had a lot of success with it. I've heard arguments to drop it and pick up another fetchland to use for Hedron Crab, but as it stands, the deck works incredibly fast. I appreciate the input, but so far, playtesting shines a different light on Shelldock Isle.

For sideboard, I would suggest Traumatize, and maybe even put it in mainboard. With Shelldock Isle, you can do it for free, and it's absolutely hilarious seeing them glare at you as they count out the cards in their deck XD!

Trockenmatt there is 1 problem with that, the max you will get is 10 cards, the min is 1. Half is not as effective if half of there library is 10 cards.

Instead of Serum Visions, I would try Visions of Beyond

trollslayer hit the nail on the head, by turn 5, I'm hoping to be putting the final nail in the coffin on my opponent. While Traumatize is a great spell against larger decks, it is just too costly to be modern effective. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Thanks for fielding that suggestion. It is appreciated.
I already have Visions of Beyond in the deck in addition to Serum Visions. In fact, I like them both so much that I decided to run both. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Hey I run a mill deck very similar in style to yours I find I've been caving to aggro and burn quite often like a 65-35 to 70-30% in favor of their decks. Any useful tips or advise? I've been testing out Ashiok, Nightmareweaver to help out but I m not 100% sold he belongs. Just another day at the Mill is my deck. I find I run out of steam a lot and can't quite finish the job. Also could use assistance with the SB!
+1 by the way

@ Fizzery
With the land base, I recommend dropping the Nephalia Drownyard. While it is a great mana dump, as a burn style mill deck, you don't want to be using mana dumps. The idea is synergy and flow. I would bump up the Watery Graves to a playset of four. Ghost Quarter, while a great enabler for Archive Trap is colorless mana, which may hurt you. I recommend keeping that at two. You will get the off only once typically in a match. They won't see it coming and you will have both piece in hand to make it happen. I personally run two Shelldock Isle, despite it coming in tapped, it lets you look at the top four cards of your library, exile one to cast later, and put the rest on the bottom of your library. When you get your opponent's library to 20 or less, you can cast it cheaply. I usually exile a finisher mill card to seal the deal. Additionally, I use Oboro, Palace in the Clouds for my recurring land drop for Hedron Crab, although a lot can be said for using fetchlands. The only down side to the fetches though is Blood Moon. It will shut them down quickly.
As for creatures, the four Hedron Crabs are a must, because you get so much value from them. Plus they double as cheap blockers. As for Snapcaster Mages, well, I want to like him, but lately, I've been tinkering with the idea of using Dark Confidant instead. So far I have had ok to decent results using him. The extra card draw always puts me ahead, but drawing into a Breaking / Entering can be painful and a game ender. In that sense, it might be worth it to side those out and bring in some Dark Confidants. As I said, I am still testing the idea though. Feel free to try it for yourself.
Onto instants, I can honestly say that a single Crypt Incursion is more than enough. Unless your meta is chocked full of creature heavy decks, the spell becomes a dead card in hand. I would consider a second one for the sideboard, but not two main board. That allows you to up the count on your Darknesses, which are great for preventing damage. I'd rather have a fog than some life gain anyday. Thought Scour is a good card, but I've opted to go with Serum Visions as I think drawing a card and scrying 2 is much more efficient. Being able to get rid of dead cards and set up my draws is far more valuable than milling an opponent for two cards.
As for your sorceries, well, I think Inquisition of Kozilek is a good card, only beaten out by Thoughtseize but I opted for Mesmeric Orb which is more of a political card. It forces your opponents to play more cautiously. Alternatively, a popular choice instead is Ensnaring Bridge, which shuts down aggro decks completely. While the orb is more of a gamble, I consider myself a lucky guy, so I chose the more daring route.
As for Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, I really want to like this card in Modern, but it's just not there. It's a cool card, and I love it, but I feel like it's too fragile for what you need. Tapping out turn 3 for Ashiok, only to have your opponent cast Mana Leak just pisses me off. I opted not to use her/him/it, but that's the beauty of mill, there are so many options, so try everything out and pick what works best for you and your meta.
As for the sideboard, get yourself a pair of Chalice of the Void. It shuts down so many decks, it's worth the investment. But I'll leave you to digest all this info for now. Good luck with the build. Please feel free to check my list for ideas and updates as I continue to improve my build. Thanks for the comments and the +1.

Made a similiar mill deck once.
Think most options are suggested and can't really say what's best, but I do suggest at least a couple of Twincasts. Those things are bonkers with easy 26 mill already on turn 2 with Archive Trap!

@ Enryore
I've tinkered with them, but I found I never had the success I wanted with them. Usually I get them when I don't have enough mana or I get them when I don't need them. Maybe I will try them out again and see if I have some success. It has potential, but I haven't been lucky enough with them. Thanks for the suggestions.

You can enter Breaking on its own, so you don't get the red from Entering into your stats!

How does your deck do against someone who has an eldrazi in their deck?
June 24, 2015 6:27 p.m.
Crypt Incursion, Ravenous Trap, and Relic of Progenitus for 3.

Also Surgical Extraction is great for dealing with Eldrazi decks, since it is an instant, I can place it on the stack on top of the Eldrazi's graveyard shuffle ability, exiling from the game. So it rarely presents a problem.

I understand you can use it to remove the eldrazi so it wont be an endless problem, but since the ability will still trigger i just figured it would be a pretty big annoyance to have to start over on milling them, maybe so much so that it costs the game. unless you had relic of progenitus or leyline of the void of course

Well I have Crypt Incursion and Surgical Extraction in the main board, and for the side board, I've got Relic of Progenitus and Ravenous Trap. Additionally, with the way this deck mills, I usually can burn them outwith additional mill spells with ease. Most scoop if I nail their win cons with Surgical Extraction.

Maybe you should use Mind Grind for landfall and Mid-Range decks.
