Removed Conduit of Ruin for Soul Conduit. This deck relies on random chance to avoid being completely broken (fewer tutors = more fun), and Soul Conduit is a fine source of capricious upfuckery I can cheat into play.

I'm guessing you're swapped Voltaic Key for Manifold Key. Have you given any thought to Mystic Forge?

Hey Wicker, thanks for taking the time to comment!

Mystic Forge and Manifold Key will both be going in. Rings of Brighthearth need to come out to eliminate infinite mana combos, and I'll be making a couple more minor adjustments.

For sure! I'm really enjoying this build, won both times I've played with it. An issue I did run into was getting soft locked with Mana Vault - I'm going to play test it with Mana Crypt in its place I think and see how it goes.

Thanks again Wicker: it's always a pleasure to learn that someone else is playing one of my lists and enjoys it. I own this deck in paper and Mana Crypt is too expensive to consider swapping in.

Totally understand man! Thanks for building something so fun! I was curious if you'd run both Mana Crypt and Mana Vault?

I considered removing Clock of Omens, but I would love your opinion on what you would substitute if you were to throw in a Mana Crypt.

Also, are there other cards out of your budget that you would replace in? I'd love to know what this would look at max power.

It depends on what you're trying to achieve. I've taken most of the tutors out ( Planar Portal and Planar Bridge fit the theme), and am trying to eliminate any infinite combos. Some cards like Lux Cannon are in for flavor, since every mad scientist needs a ray gun...

If you want max power I think you use Mox Opal and Grim Monolith for faster starts as well. Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur fits a purely cutthroat meta (it's too oppressive otherwise).

The five cards in my maybe board will be replacing Brainstorm , Basilisk Collar , Rings of Brighthearth , Clock of Omens , and Unsubstantiate . Endbringer is also too mana intensive and Urza needs a mount, so Nezahal, Primal Tide will replace it. Hope that helps.

I likewise don't want any Infinite Combos, so but I'm okay with deviating against flavor. I'm not against running Reshape/Fabricate if you think they're more powerful overall. Would you remove the Planars for those?

What would you swap for the Mox Opal, Grim Monolith, and Jin-Gitaxias? Aren't you worried about decking yourself out with Jin, or would you be relying on Kozilek to keep you afloat? Nezahal, Primal Tide looks like a ton of fun, can't wait to try it.

Thanks again for the help!

Also curious on if there's a place for Tezzeret the Seeker or if 3 Planeswalkers is too much here.

So given you're not after infinite combo, the next best pairing of cards you could tutor for are Unwinding Clock and Vedalken Orrery , so you can cast a spell every single turn with Urza and a couple rocks. Tezzeret the Seeker and Fabricate can both help you assemble it much faster than the portals.

Hedron Archive and Worn Powerstone are both inefficient rocks that could be replaced. The Immortal Sun is a non-bo with the two Ugins, so I might consider removing it for the praetor.

I really appreciate your help on this, I'm running this deck as one of my two primaries in my play group right now and it's so much fun! As for the Hedron Archive and Worn Powerstone, I see that I can replace one with Mana Crypt - is there another that you would recommend? Thank you!

I'd go with Grim Monolith . With Unwinding Clock and two Voltaic keys finding a way to untap it shouldn't be too difficult (maybe even leave Clock of Omens in).

Any interest in Deadeye Navigator?

July 15, 2019 5:23 p.m.

Matso says... #14

Ideally the deck works without needing a commander, and it has very few ETB effects. So Deadeye lets Urza spam robots for one mana but doesn't synergize with anything else. Navigator is also in my clone/steal deck and it's an incredibly dangerous/powerful card (Game of Clones). In the interests of variety and because of its one dimensional deployment I think it's a poor fit.

I'm adding Mana Crypt, Grim Monolith, and Mox Opal and removing Hedron Archive and Worn Powerstone - could I get a tip on a 3rd card to remove? Please and thanks!

Wicker says... #16

For the moment, I'm removing Mind's Eye as the 3rd.

The other additions I'm doing are:

Tezzeret the Seeker (in place of Planar Bridge) Fabricate (in place of Planar Portal) Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur (in place of The Immortal Sun)

Scalding Tarn, Polluted Delta, Flooded Strand, Misty Rainforest (in place of 4 Island)

Hopefully I can grab a Prismatic Vista soon as well!

With you using Vedalken Orrery now, have you given any thought to Drain Power?

August 3, 2019 11:15 a.m.

Matso says... #18

Drain Power is both too expensive and too competitive for me. I hope you're enjoying the changes you've made Wicker.

August 9, 2019 5:32 a.m.

Wicker says... #19

Hope you're doing well! The changes seem to be doing good so far, with a few notes:

  1. I do miss the advantage of The Immortal Sun, considering slotting it back in and just risking playing it around my 3 'walkers.

  2. I feel like I'm not getting the maximum value out of Nezahal, but I'll continue to give him a shot.

What do you mean by expensive in regards to Drain Power ? Isn't it only $1?

August 13, 2019 12:58 a.m.

Matso says... #20

Oh, duh. I found an older edition of Drain Power when I Googled it, and didn't really check any deeper.

Any interest in Emry, Lurker of the Loch?

October 14, 2019 1:28 a.m.

Matso says... #24

Emry, Lurker of the Loch : the cost reducing effect is much more useful as a commander, and aside from Academy Ruins I don't use the graveyard much: titans reshuffle it and Relic of Progenitus or Scavenger Grounds are both indescriminate.

This Urza Deck is still running super well for me! I'm running a slightly modified version with Jin-Gitaxias, Tezzeret the Seeker, and Fabricate. Do you think that Swan Song functions better in place of any of one of these? Please and thanks!
