Sideboard

Maybeboard

Creature (1)

Draw more than blue , gain life like white , and deal direct damage without red !

Black-Sac can do it all, ...at a cost.

My spin on Pauperganda's list.

The big changes in this version are the mainboard inclusion of 4 copies of Echoing Return and 2 Gurmag Anglers.

  • The Angler presents a decent mid to late game threat and has plenty of fodder to help offset it's cost with all the instants and sorceries we cast.

  • The Echoing Returns help us to recur some really nasty creatures like Serrated Scorpions and Bone Pickers.

The sideboard is for my local meta and personal battle box, but I think it's widely applicable to many of the tier 1 / 2 decks in the format.

  • Alchemist's Gift helps to keep us in the game against burn match-ups, and the deathtouch helps our Footlight Fiends and Perilous Myrs to better trade against bigger creatures.

  • Choking Sands is included to slow Tron down, but it can also mess with snow-based taplands. Chip damage is a bonus.

  • Darkness is a surprise fog effect that might help to buy another turn and help us "get there."

  • Echoing Decay can be used against elves, birds, etc. but it can also be used on your own creatures if you really need to get some triggers in.

  • Feed the Swarm helps to deal with Bogles and Graveyard Removal (Relic of Progenitus).

  • Sylvok Lifestaff helps against burn and keeps your lifetotal above your opponents for when you use Crypt Rats to finish the game.

So far, these changes have made a massive difference in my (admittedly limited) testing.

I've identified a few things that really hurt the deck and would welcome ideas to counteract them.

  • Counterspell heavy decks can really shut down our card draw and recursion.

  • Graveyard removal makes Gurmag difficult to cast and stops us from recurring our sac fodder and threats.

  • Lifegain thwarts our plan of whittling away the lifetotal and finishing the game with Crypt Rats

Notes:

Decklist adjusted around June 2023 with LOTR set.

-2 Perilous Myr -4 Swamp +4 Troll of Khazad-dum +2 Witch's Cottage

Alchemist's Gift should probably be Toxin Analysis The ability on Witch's Cottage is nice to have, but not the main plan or main way to recur our bigger threats.
