The Deck Box —Jan. 20, 2015

Went to a Modern event tonight at my new favourite LGS, had some nice results. Was relieved to discover that the banning of Treasure Cruise wasn't implemented yet and I could get one last chance to play Ancestral Recall! :D Huzzah!

Round 1 (Monogreen? Tron) - Loss

I don't know much about Tron decks, but this one seemed to only run Forests along with the Tron lands so I'll call it Monogreen. Stomped me pretty hard with Wurmcoil Engine and Karn Liberated both games, had very bad luck with draws and mulliganed to 5 game 2. Oh well, moving on! (0-1)

Round 2 (Boros Soldiers/Equipment? It was weird) - Win

This guy wasn't having a good night. Apparently - he told me - ran 28 lands and never saw more than three either game. He didn't seem very experienced or familiar with the cards, so it kind of felt like a free win. He had a good sense of humour, though! (1-1)

Round 3 - UWR Twin - Win

Thought it was basically a mirror match at first, but then Deceiver Exarch hit the board and I was filled with a sense of impending doom. Lost the first game, but managed to play cleverly and draw well enough to win in 3 games - and the lucky topdeck of Thought Scour into Lightning Bolt into attack for 3 with Monastery Swiftspear certainly didn't hurt. :P (2-1)

Round 4 - UWR Delver - Loss

This match was even more mirror-y. His deck seemed like straight UR Delver at first, but he had some white-producing lands so I figured he was probably running Geist of Saint Traft, Path to Exile, or both. It turned out to be Geist, which was instrumental in clinching his victory - that, and his lucky topdeck of a Forked Bolt to off both my Young Pyromancers (cry). (2-2)

Had a lot of fun with this deck, and I think now more than ever that there'll still be plenty of options for UR Delver post-Treasure Cruise. It was a deck before Cruise existed, right? It'll still be a deck. I'm sure of it. :D
