Green Hydra

Modern

Big green snakey things! This deck is designed to get a few simple combos off to make a giant creature or two, put trample on it, and swing for game.

Corpsejack Menace, Heroes' Bane and other creatures that rely on +1/+1 counters are the star of the show here. Get one of these creatures by pumping lots of mana into it, letting Corpsejack double its size as it hits the field (or grows) and then put trample on it with Rancor or [Kessig Wolf Run]]. There are some other nice creatures with built in trample as well, which can grow over time. Managorger Hydra and Kavu Predator both benefit from Corpsejack's prescence.

Most of the support cards are to protect or leverage the giant creatures' sizes for better effect. Solidarity of Heroes doubles the size of the already big creatures (or triples if Corpsejack is around). Predator's Rapport is a HUGE life gain card if you have a big guy on the field. Mining Slime gives you an extra body to work with as needed which will copy the size of your biggest creature.

Vines of Vastwood is the most useful protection card to keep removal spells off your creatures and doubles as an effective pump spell when needed. Prey Upon is an obvious include to leverage your giant creatures for the purpose of removal. Withstand Death is arguably not as good as Vines of Vastwood, but it has its uses. Particularly against deathtouch, or anything that might kill but doesn't target. Just here for coverage. Forced Adaptation and Hardened Scales are little passive spells that rack up big effect over time to increase the size of your creatures semi-passively. Especially effective when used together.

Some more notes on creatures: Protean Hydra serves well as an early game creatures that forces your opponent to not swing wildly else it will grow larger. It also escapes deathtouch and benefits from Corpsejack. Savageborn Hydra is a huge threat in this deck if you can get all your colors off. Getting him to a reasonable size and then pumping him with Kessig Wolf Run can let you easily swing for enough damage to kill your opponent, or at least wipe their field. Scourge of Skola Vale is the sleeper in the deck. He seems unintimidating at 2/2, but if he "eats" a creature he gains it's size, or double if Corpsejack is out. Bioshift is useful for a similar purpose, or to save +1/+1 counters that otherwise may be lost due to removal. Or even for combat shenanigans. Nessian Wilds Ravager is a beatstick that doubles as removal as needed. Mistcutter Hydra has haste, protection from blue, and can't be countered. Very resistant creature that can serve as a very potent threat in both mid and late game.

Big creatures need big mana. Utopia Sprawl is faster than elvish mystic, and fixes mana. I often declare black or red if I don't already have a Savage Lands on the field. Sylvan Caryatid serves as an early game defender and also fixes mana if we don't have all our colors yet.Overgrown Battlement gives some early game defense as well, and synergizes with Sylvan Caryatid, but produces more total mana. Perfect for pumping huge amounts of mana into a creature. Rosheen Meanderer also helps to pump mana into X cost hydras, or even Kessig Wolf Run.

Avatar of the Resolute is a fantastic early game creature with reach to threaten potential flying attackers. Spider Umbra can be used to put reach on your giant creature for coverage against flyers, and adds totem armor to protect against removal.

Leatherback Baloth and Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers are also excellent early-mid creatures. Big enough to stick to the field well but small enough to not be huge mana drops. General purpose creatures to keep you alive while you get set up to throw out something huge.

So what do you think? Tagged as "needs help" because I'd love to get some feedback or suggestions for improvements. It's budget friendly, loaded with flavor, now I just want it to hold up against other modern decks decently well. Haven't tried it against anyone but my friends yet!

Feedback appreciated! Thanks Tapped Out!
