Maybeboard

After getting destroyed by a Brago, King External in a casual tournament at the Canadian MTG Nationals I saw the power of blinking and flickering (or aren't they the same thing...). Brago is too slow and grindy for my stule, and no fun to play against so I'm trying Roon of the Hidden Realm. Starting from the Evasive Maneuvers deck that came with the Commander Anthology I replaced with cards with lots of ETB effects. A work in progress (all decks are, but this one is really lacking, especially the mana base).

Since I haven't quite figured out the deck yet, here are some pointers to great decks and descriptions:

Roon, Mayor of Value Town is an opinionated description of a Roon deck by TaegukTheWise. Taeguk's deck doctoring has been a huge help in building this deck.

EDHRec Roon page of course.

Blink and you'll miss it is an older but very good overview of Roon.

Roon of the Hidden Realm Rhino Blink is an awesome description of a Roon deck and key cards.

Commander showdown compares and contrasts with Brago.

saffronlive's Roon list along with video play.

Prophet of Kruphix has an excellent primer for Roon.

Jaroslava Stefankova has another good description of a Roon deck.

MTG Grinders has a good description of Deadeye Navigator, one of the key cards.

Key Cards

Deadeye Navigator Target Mystic Snake for repeated counterspell, Acidic Slime or Reclamation Sage for repeated artifact removal, Peregrine Drake for infinite mana, Venser, Shaper Savant to lock up the board. Many cards in the deck are good targets.

Rite of Replication With the kicker it's good early and late. Kick with Acidic Slime to destroy five lands? Combine with Eternal Witness, get Rite of Replication back with the first one...

Eldrazi Displacer is a crazy card. Paired with Peregrine Drake it creates infinite mana and provides infinite blink effects. With infinite mana we can get infinite card draw by flickering Cloudblzer or Mulldrifter.

Birthing Pod is much fun. TaegukTheWise describes the following chain:

Mana, Ramp, and Fixing

  • Mana. The Metalworker discusses the mana base I strive to achieve but don't have the cards. Until I get the fetches, I'm running bounce lands which I don't like. Running a single Wastes as a fetchable source of colourless mana for Eldrazi Displacer's ability; utility lands and Sol Ring can also be used but are not fetchable. Looking at acquiring filter lands since they tap for colourless, but alas are not fetchable.

  • Ramp. Farhaven Elf, Wood Elves are awesome as they get lands with recurrable ETB effects. Cultivate, Farseek and Kodama's Reach are my mana sorceries. Birds of Paradise is my single mana dork, not on theme and possibly on the chopping block. Sol Ring, yes.

  • Fixing. Darksteel Ingot, yes. Chromatic Lantern, love it. Running a full set of signets. They're awesome when I get them out turn 1-3, but make me sad when I draw them later in the game. Flickering my green sorceries and creatures can get me the basics I need.

Fiddly Bits

I've only played this a few times, and I'm not going to list every card I want, but there are already some general improvements I want to make:

  • Win Condition. Currently the plan is to out-value my opponents and maybe finish them off with Armada Wurm. Is it enough? Time and testing will tell.

  • Draw. I love drawing cards but can't put Necropotence in this deck.

Weaknesses

Torpor Orb will shut down ETB triggers and kill the deck.

Board wipes. Mana and blink enablers can hopefully save a few key creatures, but we're still fragile to board wipes.
