I have 16 green, 10 blue, 10 red sources. And Caryatid. Ideally it would be 18, 12 and 12 so I can play Ascendancy early. Caryatid half-counts because a creature is less reliable and speedy than a land. Dropping Wooded Foothills and 2 mountains puts me at 6 red sources which is not enough. Also, fetch lands are awesome as a search tool with Courser. I believe I can do better with the lands somehow, but it requires careful thought.

However, you only have 1 maindecked card that requires red mana; Temur Ascendancy.

Also, you have 11 red sources, just saying...

Yes the single most important card in the deck. (and, I've been editing my mana since you gave the idea.)

Okay, are you ready for something crazy? I was looking for cards to help search the deck, and Courser of Kruphix + Pyxis of Pandemonium is BONKERS. Every turn I have a choice: Exile a card before I draw, after I draw, or after I play a scry or fetch or draw by some other means. So I'm ripping through my deck at double speed. And at the opportune moment, I crack it, they get whatever stuff, but I get devotion and lands and combo pieces. Almost guaranteed to win on the spot.

Had the MOST fun at FNM today. The first time I played actual games, and it proves the potential. The combo worked 6 times in 14 games, and in addition several times were near misses where it probably could have won with better play.Overall result: 2 match wins, 3 losses, 7 games won, 8 lost.

Changes planned: Give the deck more on-board game through:- Main decking Bassara Tower Archer, side boarding Communes. I did this every match and I always was astonished at how quickly Nykthos turned on with those guys. This means Genesis Hydra will do better at Commune's job.
- Main boarding Crater's Claws, side boarding Singing Bell Strike.
- One more Polukranos somehow.

Round 1: 0-2 Red devotion. BAD DRAWS. I mulliganed to awful hands both games and was run over before I got anything going. I mean these are once-in-20 bad hands twice in a row. Led with Genesis Hydra for 1 because I had to.

Round 2: 0-2 Temur Aggro. Game 1 he got the god hand of Elf, Knuckleblade, Anger of the Gods, Stubborn Denial, Crater's Claws and just rolled me. Game 2, Polis Crusher crushed my Courser, and Stormbreath Dragon ruled the skies. I had poor draws, and need something to slow them down.

Round 3: 2-1 B/W Warriors. G1 Deck error: I drew 4 Fetch lands and discovered my deck didn't have its mountain. So I was short mana and got rewarded with a Sorin Ultimate. Crater's Claws I think needs to be maindecked instead of Singing Bell Strike. G2 quick combo. G3 just Polukranos and devotion was enough.

Round 4: 1-2 vs Four Color midrange. G1: Turn 4 combo! I never get it turn 4, but somehow it happened. G2, G3: he managed to disrupt the combo with timely enchantment removal. I needed to side in Negate. I also could have played more tightly. I should have traded his Elvish Mystic with my Bassara because Anafenza was out of control.

Round 5: 2-0 vs Mardu midrange. Combo'd out twice, though I was close to 0 life each time.

i would use Swordwise Centaur instead of Bassara Tower Archer for better blocking unless your mainly concerned in the hexproof, the reach isn't very good due to it only having 2 power anyways

Hornet Nest is also a very good way of slowing down any aggro deck, its an ok blocker and nobody wants to make little flying f****rs that just make everything a whole lot more complicated for them

Hornet Nest is a strong possibility. I like the Archer for a few reasons, one of which is Control matches, and another is that the deck is otherwise painfully weak to flyers Having 2 of these is a (bad) remedy, except it's excellent devotion. I probably should have Arbor Colossus in the side.

Also anytime you have infinate green mana and the ascendancy down Hydra brood master is game over. Draw you're deck attack with a 1007/1007 hydra alongside 1000 1000/1000 hydras.

Wow, it looks like Joey Page picked up my list off of MtgSalvation. There's a few changes (probably for the better) but it's basically the same thing.

Ugin saved Brad Nelson from a loss game 2, but Ugin was insufficient games 1 and 3.

Hey man, me and my buddy made this deck last weekend and we have a purphoros that does extremely well. With all the bounce, you never have to "swing" for lethal. You just resolve a couple hornet queens or bounce a caryatid a thousand times. Let me know what you think!

jubale says... #18

Jarhead: yes, Nissa stole the show after a series of kill spells cleared the board. Combo was nowhere in sight.

Purphoros is definitely a card to consider.

ive been playing around with Simic devotion and have been considering splashing red (but red seemed kinda boring) but this is a rather fun idea especially because I've been looking for a draw engine in the deck.

Devoting Life to Biomancy

especially as FRF goes forward this looks like alot of fun (not quite sure where to put the ascendancy and the cat though) any advise?

At the same time that Page and Toephner revealed what Ascendancy can do, Fabiano piloted a Sultai Control list to the top, and I have to admit, it is a damned fine list. Control players are going to flock to it. I've started testing the matchup with and I feel this deck has a better shot than most versus a control oriented list, but the games are EXTREMELY close.

I think you need to de-emphasize the combo (Bell Strike) and make the most of being aggressive early. If the combo shows up and you close a game early, awesome! But focusing on the combo gives them more opportunity to stall out until they have you in a no-win scenario.

Let attrition do your work for you, before they can start piling up card advantage..

nleming17 says... #24

Thassa's Ire is a better version of Singing Bell Strike due to the fact that you can tap other players creatures and needs less devotion

the only better thing is that there is a control factor if youre really struggling in the game
