Finally —Dec. 27, 2014
After weeks of going 2-2 or 3-3 I finally picked up my first 1st finish. My reckless style of play always gets me in trouble, but I have fun none the less. Loose keeps, scrying into timely lands, some would say I had more lucky then a Joey Wheeler. Yes, Yes, wrong game I know. Friday after Christmas the turn was less then usually, but I earned my victory by going undefeated! 8 players, 4 rounds and top 2 to face off for number 1.
Round was against Temur midrange. The first time I faced an opponent with stormbreath and a fair about of burn. Some would say this was almost a mirror match. The difference is he had savage knuckle blades and I had butcher of the horde. Round one I manage to draw magma jets for each of the mystics he deployed. Stunting his board until I could play a stormbreath, When I did, leaving my shields down he also played stormbreath. I was okay with trading dragons having a second one in my hand. Game two I sided in all my burn, including my trial card stoke the flames. Again I kept his board clear and landed a stormbreath and rode it to victory.
Round two was against RW Heroic. Turn one when he dropped a Akroan Crusader I knew I needed to keep the board clear and that is what I did.
Round Three was against Mardu Aggro. Rabbles and Brimaz and tokens, oh my. unfortunately for him he was mana screwed the whole time.
Round four was against Jeskai tokens. So stormbreath is an underplayed undervalued card in standard right now, but the whole night was me flying over the top on my opponents with stormbreath or butcher or ashcloud and punishing them for not having answers. This was a scary match up for me, but with all the burn and doiwnfalls for answers, utter end for the ascendancy.
Final round was Green devotion. Creature decks I can handle, tonight I saw no siege rhinos which is a card that kills me, I got great draws and timely draws. Stormbreath did a ton of work, stoke the flames did enough for me to consider keeping in. Elspeth was blah, but Chandra was a beast! Sorin I never had a moment where I wanted to cast him, never saw sarkhan now that I cut him to a one of. Anger of the gods did a lot of work, but truly can not say enough how much of an all star stormbreath was.
In conclusion I have a feeling I will see some opposing stormbreath dragons the next FNM. People were chirping the whole night about ne fighting dirty, but effective with my burn & dragons. Can Mardu Burn be a thing? Well, probably not, but lastnight it was good enough!
I didn't pull much, a mantis rider of note. The stokes promo is excellent, my third one in the month of December!
Until next year!
